Instead of having to fiddle about with playlists and playlist folders, just let us drag artists into the sidebar. Like this.
The artits pages are kep up to date by Spotify with all new releases automatically appearing in there and zero work for the user. All artists have a unique URI, it would be easy.

As simple as it could be: You just drag artists into the sidebar. And when you click artist, there will open same artist window as normal. Of course would be great plus to receive announcements of new albums and other stuff. Normally when I open a spotify I start listning music by select an artist, and listening to the same artist or album at a time. And it is annoying to always write artist name to the searchbar. I don't like playlist's at all, because it is so tedious to do and gets boring so quickly.
There is not a unique/correct way of organizing music.
You may like to listen to music of the same artist. But Spotify is so big that there may be users that want to listen to songs by different criteria:
Therefore, I think that playlist is a good way of offering this sorting options to songs, like "tags" if you want.
Instead of changing many things, I think it would more be more interesting to you (and also to me) to have a list which contains all the artists of your starred songs.
You could have there all the functionalities that other posts have suggested (such subscribe to artist, updates and new releases, etc.).
Then you could stop using playlists if you want to, but allowing other users to continue using playlists =)
Cheers!
I listen to most music directly from the overview from an artist, no real need for playlists. Adding artist to the sidebar would great. Then I only will have to make playlists for songs of several artists.
I would love to see this feature implimented since I typically browse by artist and choose albums from the artist page. Most of my music listening is by albums and not playlists, so having the ability to save my favorite artists would be hugely helpful.
I don't like this idea, but I would not oppose implementing it as an option for those who prefer listening by artist, and letting Spotify make their music choices. Playlists are Spotify's strength, and there is zero chance of getting rid of them.
Hello folks,
Sorry for the delay on updating this idea, we have a lot of them coming in every day and it is hard to update them all.
We actually want to implement this, since we know how functional would be. Since we are trying to clean up the side bar, we are working on different ways to make this possible, we will do what you are asking for but in another way (that is why we mark this specific idea as "Not right Now").
We will get back to you when we have something new to say about it or when the option is available.
Thanks a lot for your contribution and awesome idea ;)
Rocio, thank you for your response. For me personally, the idea isn't about the sidebar in particular. I'd just like a way to browse through artists, similar to Google Music, iTunes, etc. Maybe an artist list, right below playlists? Then, when you follow an artist, they are added to your list. Often times, I'll want to store an entire artist to listen to later, yet I end up resorting to starring a song then launching their page from there. Searching each time isn't really viable, as I typically listen on my phone and saving songs for offline listening doesn't appear to be easy from the search menu (please correct me if I'm wrong). Plus, it's extremely difficult to search for artists with non-Latin characters in the name, as I can't easily type them on my phone without going into my phone settings and switching the keyboard. Right now, I've ended up searching for artists, getting the mixed page of results, sorting the whole thing by popularity, adding it as a playlist, and removing the results that pop up from other artists. It feels far too hacky, and I feel like there must be a better way to do this. The recent Spotify update made this a tad bit more difficult, as I can't run control-A on the artist page anymore, I have to do it from the mixed page of results. If you know of a good solution to this, that would be great. Thanks for your help.
