Make the library more functional

Status: Under Consideration

The Library is a really confusing and endless list of songs, especaly on the mobile apps. You can't just click around and just listen to music without knowing what you want to hear.

It would be awesome if there was a possibility to Split the Screen when you're in the library an show a list with Artists, Album and Genre. Like we all know it from iTunes, Winamp, WMP. So you could click on an artist an all titles, albums and genres that aren't realated to him disappear. Just like a predefined Filters for all the artists, genres and albums in your library.

So it would be much easier to search to search for music in your library without knowing exactly what you are searching for.

This is also why a search function can't replace such filters.

There should also be a possibility to edit which details are shown in the library. Things like "year of release", "track number on the album" or just "number on the playlist" are hardly missing.

Hello folks! Sorry for the delay on updating this idea.

We are going to mark it as "Under Consideration" since we have passed the idea internally and our team is considering and thinking of a better way to display the library.

We will get back to this thread when we have news about it. So keep a close eye on it... :)

Thanks for your contribution!

Split view would be worthwhile, but my kudos are especially for the possibility to edit what detail columns appear in the library view, specifically:

  • "year of ORIGINAL release" since we all know there are many albums that have like 3 or 4 versions on spotify (this would be helpful to create a quick play list of "80's music" etc.),
  • "genre" and/or "tags" (it would be FABULOUS if you could import your last.fm tags into Spotify as well as your last.fm library into Spotify. Before Spotify, I used to use my last.fm library to keep track of songs that I've heard but hadn't gotten to buying or artists/albums I wanted to check out... which I still do for songs/artists/albums that aren't in Spotify)
  • "Playlists song appears in" (which would help me delete duplicate songs that appear in my library for whatever reason)

Ideally, there a list of possible columns to select would appear if you right clicked on any of the column headings in the library view.

But just wanted to add: Keep up the good work! I love Spotify - if ya'll keep adding features and improving its usability, Spotify will be able to make itunes completely obsolete...as it is in my heart. I do resent every time I have to open up itunes...

we want a new library system please look at itunes, ITS LITERALLY THE BIGGEST FLOOR IN AN OTHERWISE SUPERB PROGRAM

+ Skins and a new interface would be nice

The lack of this feature is about the one thing that often makes me cancel my subscription and move back to iTunes.

As a Premium customer, who has about 600 songs in playlists all offline, it's just stupid to navigate through this. I love starred, I love the playlists, but I also want something to browse via artist, genre, album.

Basically, keep whats there now, but add functionality like Itunes, native Music app on iPad/iPhone and whatnot.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of these ideas implemented separately to improve functionality in the meantime while we wait for a larger library redesign.

I read through six pages of this looking for the part where Spotify replies and says 'yes we can,' 'no we won't,' or 'maybe one day.' Where is that? Otherwise this is a rather pointless exercise.

I'm a programmer. I know that sometimes some enhancements can be a pain, but this should not be the most massive project ever. It borders on elementary.

I'm annoyed, but it's still better than the Rhapsody Android app where they forgot the shuffle. Oops. Their excuse is that adding it now is too complicated, like adding a bathroom after you build a house. I get their point, and it might be that difficult. But even if you have to raze the house to the ground and start over, you don't build a house without a bathroom.

I agree. I like to browse through my collection. Rdio does this really well (I may have to swap over).

Any news?

Status? I love to see this feature

I'd love to see the play queue in its own pane on the right, a la windows media player (one thing WMP really got right)

As much as I love Spotify, until they implement something like this then it is not going to replace iTunes or other library based music players.

Would be wonderful to have a Add to Library button on the album page and in the option menus when right clicking.  Then after that it pops into the Library section and have it be browseable by Arist.

As someone with some (small) experience in user experience design, I understand that just because other software uses this feature doesn't mean it should automatically be implemented. There needs to be a good reason for it, a service that it provides the user that's not otherwise provided. Well there is such a service: browsing.

Spotify in its current state is great at many things, including seeking out music that you already know you want to listen to (using the search function), or discovering new music (either through radio or friend's playlists). But what it doesn't do is provide a good "history" of sorts, a way to browse through music you've listened to before and re-discover something. Lately I've found myself opening up Spotify - especially on my iPhone - and thinking "I have no idea what to listen to". And more than anything I wish I could just open up all the songs and albums that I've starred and flip through them until I come across something that I hadn't thought of. Otherwise I'm relying on playlists or, even worse, my own memory. "What is it that I like to listen to? Let me think..."

So if you're looking for a strong, user experience focused reason to implement this feature, that would be it for me. It would offer an experience that's not currently provided and - in my opinion - would finally give the Starred playlist a purpose. Heck, even in it's current, flat format I still used the Starred playlist today (on my desktop) to re-discover some old music I forgot I used to listen to. Expanding on that functionality would be absolutely clutch.
