Spotify needs to support Android 3 (Honeycomb), Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich / ICS)

Status: Implemented
by on ‎11-02-2012 07:41 PM

The limited number of supported Android handsets shown on the Spotify web pages is disappointing.

In addition, claiming to not support newer versions of Android, while still allowing it to show in the market is weak.

Many phones and tablets will be upgraded to Android 4 / ICS in the coming few months and your user base, many of which will be unable to stably use the mobile client, will be quick to complain and may start moving on.

This is copy of many previous threads over at GetSatisfaction, including this one here: https://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/when_will_spotify_be_ready_for_android_ics

Status: Implemented

As many of you know, we released the new version of Spotify for Android to the Google Play Store yesterday complete with the following features:

  • Top-to-bottom redesign
  • Support for Android 4.0
  • High Resolution Artist Images
  • 320kbps listening
  • Crossfade
  • Gapless playback
  • Last.fm scrobbling
  • Playlist folders
  • Play queue
  • Home Screen Widget

I'm apprehensive to change this status to "implemented" seeing as it's technically the home for two ideas:

  1. Support for ICS devices
  2. Support for Honeycomb devices

Since Spotify works quite well on ICS devices, it should also work nicely on an Android tablet. However, claiming we now support tablets would be akin to saying we supported the iPad because the old iOS app worked on iPads. Its only fair to distinguish the two.

Given the recent launch of the new version of the Android app in Google Play, I'm electing to go ahead and update the status of this idea to "implemented". My recommendation would be for Honeycomb enthusiasts to add their vote to a new idea thread so we can collect votes, a.k.a. "Kudos" there. While you don't necessarily need to add your vote to this idea, I have found a preexisting one around this here:

I managed to get some of my playlists running offline, which is cool I guess, but not worth paying the extra 5E / month for. I really hope they get the update out soon! Or maybe just fix the existing app, even though it's not that great.

(BTW using a Galaxy S2 with ICS, and forced offline all the time... :( )

In case anyone missed it, Spotify have announced a preview release of a new Android app, that supports ICS.

See the blog or the forum on where to get it.

I've created a thread to collate peoples thoughts on features that are missing or we'd like : http://community.spotify.com/t5/Mobile-Android/quot-Official-quot-new-application-beta-release-missi...

Hi everyone,

It's here. Spotify for Android is getting a complete overhaul and we wanted you to get a special preview. Here’s what’s coming:

  • Totally new app with full support for Android 4.0
  • Top-to-bottom redesign
  • All-new slide-out navigation
  • Even more social - check out friends’ profile pages and playlists on the go
  • Artist imagery in high resolution
  • Related artist view - available for the first time on mobile
  • So much faster!

That’s not the end of it. We’re working hard on adding further features, including folders and Last FM scrobbling, before the app goes live in Google Play.

In order to get your hands on the all-new Android preview, firstly set your phone to allow installation from ‘Unknown Sources’ by going to the Settings > Applications > Unknown sources menu. Once that’s done, click on the link below on your phones browser, then the big 'Spotify Android' button to get the update.

Here you go: http://www.spotify.com/download/previews/

Really hope you guys like it.

Like what I have seen so far.  However the new app automatically stores music in internal memory (only 3GB free) whereas I have all my music on a SD card with 64GB free.  How do I make the app store music on the SD card?  This was something that the previous non ICS version allowed you to do on first login.

The biggest things for me would definitely be adding notification bar controls (like Google's own Music app) and implementation of RemoteControlClient so that it will integrate with the default lockscreen and any other custom ones. It doesn't look like it would be particularly difficult to add...

like what i'm seeing.

a lock screen would be awesome as well.

it comes in handy while driving, not having to look down.
