Spotify Mini Player Concept

Status: Not right now
by smitholi ‎11-05-2012 12:56 PM - edited ‎11-05-2012 01:39 PM

I made this a few days ago while brushing up on my UI/Photoshop skills. I wasn't going to post it anywhere until a friend mentioned it might be of interest to other Spotify users.

The idea came about, after I kept maximising and minimising Spotify just to see my play queue and sometimes jump down a few . This is my solution making it a less obtrusive way of seeing what's coming up and track jumping.

I'm sure there are lots of limitations as to why this can't be made into a real working taskbar item, but any feedback is still much appreciated.

The image is still awaiting approval so it might not be showing up for some. You can view it online here: http://forr.st/~UMb

Hello folks! Sorry for the delay on updating this idea...we have lots of them coming in every day..:(

We have discussed this with our Design Team, we have always loved this concept and we want to implement it. We know the mini player is being displayed in other services, we also will since it is a really great feature.

At the moment, we are going to mark it as "Not right now", check the thread out since we will come back to this in the future.

Thanks a lot for your feedback and contribution, you guys rock!

Make spacebar be play/pause in apps and radio

Pressing spacebar in an app scrolls the page (or does nothing). I know this behaviour comes from the fact that apps is built using web technogly and run in Chromium that's embed into Spotify desktop, but almost everywhere else in Spotify spacebar is play/pause.

Also: Make cmd+L (OS X) focus the search input in apps/radio (as it is in the rest of the app) (I know that option+cmd+F works for this in apps/radio)

I want to pluck the Browser-style Back/Forward buttons that are available on Desktop version and drop them smack somewhere into mobile version.

i.e. I want the ability to hop Back to the previous song played when it was on a previous playlist- not just back to previous song on current album or playlist- and by extension, the ability to hop Back to that previous playlist.

This modest improvement to functionality could be effected by:

  1. Adding the ubiquitous left/right back/fwd triangle buttons to edges of current area containing REW |<< and >>| FFW
  2. Adding said buttons as a transparent overlay that appears somewhere on top of the album cover
  3. Adding Back/Forward functionality to the options that get called up in dark grey overlay that shows when small i button is activated

I prefer option 3. because it's least disruptive to current UI, the simplicity of which I really enjoy. If users howl for the function to be more front and center then someone on payroll can figure out a solution, I have no doubt.

Option 1. would have a crowding effect. One thing I love about Spotify mobile is the clean and simple feel of the design.

Option 2. would look clunky, and some users may regard that album cover area as inviolable.

'Back' is a great way to not lose track of songs and artists that I haven't yet starred or added to a playlist while I'm discovering new music on desktop version, or just handy for general navigation. Not having this functionality on mobile results in a few additional, frustrating clicks and swipes to go Back when I want to. (Changed my mind about Chief Keef playlist, let's go back to A Day to Remember!) This is exacerbated when playlists are mysteriously cloning themsleves at night like Gremlins.

So...

GIMME.

P.S. If somehow this in there already and I'm just too daft to have noticed it... stellar! Point me in that direction and I'll gladly pipe down.

When I close the Spotify window on Mac (using ctrl-w), it is cumbersome to reopen. First of all, your option-command-1 shortcut for opening the main window is not the standard, so I have to remember a specific shortcut for Spotify. Second, a lot of apps automatically reopen the window if I command-tab back to the application. I really wish Spotify would do this.
