Podcasts still auto-downloading episodes after toggling off

My Question or Issue

I have auto-downloads turned on for a handful of podcasts that I listen to regularly and like to keep up-to-date with. Over the last couple of months I’ve changed my mind on liking a few of them so I unfollowed the podcast, and toggled the auto-downloads to “off” for those particular podcasts. However, the episodes still auto-download to my “Your Episodes” list and I have to delete them manually from the list and from my downloads. Each time I’ve seen this happen I’ve gone into the settings for the podcast I unfollowed and confirmed that yes, the auto-downloads are toggled “off”. But the episodes continue to auto-download every time there’s a new one.

This is happening with at least three different podcasts and I’ve been having this issue for a month or two now. My phone OS and Spotify are running the latest versions as far as I know. I’ve tried re-following and then un-following the podcasts again, as well as toggling the auto-downloads “on” and then “off” again.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the late reply here.

Can you let us know if you've already tried to log out > restart your device > log back in? It's also a good idea to try clearing your cache to remove any old files that might be causing issues.

If that doesn't do it for you, could you let us know your phone's Spotify version and, if possible, if you experience this on other mobile devices?

We'll be on the lookout for your answer and we'll see what we can suggest next. Let us know if there's anything else we can do for you in the meantime.

Hi, thanks for your help.

After seeing your reply I did clear my cache and logged out, restarted my iPhone, and logged back in but the issue appears to still be happening.

I don’t use Spotify on any other devices, just an iPhone 13 running iOS 17.1.2

Spotify version is 8.8.92.666.

Thanks for getting back to us and for the troubleshooting you've tried so far.

Would you mind testing this with a different account? If a family member has a Spotify account, it'd be great to ask them to log in on your device to see if they'll be able to reproduce the issue. This will help us understand if it's account related or not.

In case the behavior continues, you can try performing a clean reinstall of the app by following this guide. We recommend this step since it gets you the latest app version and removes corrupted data from previous installations that could be causing issues with the app's performance on your device.

Hey @cromec55,

Welcome to the Community and thank you for joining the conversation.

To continue investigating this, since this option is only available in the mobile app, could you include a screenshot of the auto-download options turned off for all shows? You can find this by opening a show on your mobile > Tap the gear icon () > Manage download settings. You should have all the toggles turned OFF to avoid episodes from auto-downloading to your device. If not, hit the button Turn off all shows at the bottom of the screen. You can also limit the downloads to 1 new episode per show.

After this, we'd recommend logging out and back in on the other devices to force the sync between them and the new settings applied to your account.

I am also having this problem. I tried all of the recommended fixes, and still nothing will help. It's very annoying! Can someone from Spotify please help, maybe look into my account? My username on spotify is < snip - moderator edit >- thank you!

Just to confirm, is this happening with multiple podcasts or only with a specific one? If this happens with all podcasts, it's well worth running a clean reinstall of the app to get rid of any cached files that might be causing trouble.

If the issue persists, could you send us the info @OscarDC asked for previously along with the exact make/model, operating system and Spotify version of your device?

Lastly, we removed your username from your post as we don't recommend sharing private info in the Community.

They had me sign out of all devices (computer, iPads, phones, etc.), then
sign into only one device and toggle off the auto-downloading.

Turns out it was just a syncing issue. Worked great after that and no more
auto-downloading.

Hello, I have this problem as well. I have tried to log out of all accounts on all devices, delete spotify and log out and reinstall, but nothing works. It has only been happening with one podcast, and I have tried everything.
