Hi @EgorL

Thanks for asking your question here in the Spotify Community.

I understand you’re looking to build a commercial app that plays music directly inside the app and will be supported by advertisements. It’s a creative idea, but Spotify’s current developer requirements make this kind of project unfeasible.

To clarify, streaming in your app can happen indirectly through the Spotify App Remote, which works for both Free and Premium users as long as they already have the Spotify app installed on their device. If the user has a Spotify Premium subscription, you can also stream music directly inside your app by using the Web Playback SDK. Because your app would be streaming music in one of these ways, ads are not allowed inside the app.

On top of that, Spotify does not offer a developer tier for commercial apps unless you already represent a well‑established business with a reach of at least 250,000 users. These requirements, combined with the restrictions around streaming and advertising, unfortunately make it impossible to build this type of app within Spotify’s guidelines.

I hope this helps you understand why this use case cannot be carried out.

Hello,

I would like to develop an application. I'm an independent developer and do not have 250,000 monthly active users.

Can I use the Spotify API to add Spotify tracks so that users can listen to them directly within my application?

Are there any usage limits or quotas for the API?

My application will be commercial and supported by advertisements. What is the pricing policy for the Spotify API? Is there any cost associated with using the API, and if so, what are the terms?

Hey @Ximzend,

Thanks for the detailed description of the issue. I have built apps with Spotify's API keys in the past and never had issues and was pretty shocked when I saw these new requirements when I started running into errors with new users. Do you know if Spotify gave any sort of reasoning or justification behind this change?

I imagine it would have something to do with the amount of apps being made with AI now and overload on their end, which is understandable but I would think they could add a paid option like Apple Music does with MusicKit. Would really love to be able to build hobby projects again.
