SDK Web App depreciation? (functionality only for premium users error)

I'm doing research for an app I plan to build that would use the Spotify SDK to play tracks in the browser but it seems something is wrong?

After a few hours of digging it seems that every deployed app I can find that is built on top of the Spotify SDK returns with a 403 error saying "this functionality is restricted to premium users only" regardless of the fact that I am authenticating with a Premium account. I also tried a few apps in Safari and Edge, no luck getting anything to play anywhere.

Wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue or if Spotify has made some breaking changes? Would hate to start trying to build a cool project only to realize it's pointless to deploy because it won't work. TIA for any help!
