Spotify Gift card invalid code issue

I purchased a $60 gift card from major retailer, it was a electronic code from their website. I received it and when I tried to enter it I got a "oops something went wrong, please try again" message. I tried again, verified the code was correct same issue.

Contacted the retailer, they verified it wasn't working, and I got another code, same issue, same error. They verified this, and refunded my money at this point.

I have the Spotify w/Hulu plan, are gift cards not eligible for this, as the retailer seemed to verify on their end there was an issue.

Yes, gift cards will not work with a third party provider (such as Spotify and Hulu combined).
