The new now playing sidebar pops up every time i click to play a playlist, despite it being disabled in my settings.

Could you try clean-installing the Spotify app? This tends to fix most such issues easily.

Please check out the clean-install guide here, share your Spotify app version as well as the system OS version in the next response and let me know how it goes. 🙂

A "clean-install" did nothing.

There's no mention of Linux on that page, so maybe this will help you:

These are the correct steps to "clean-install" on Linux:

1. Make sure spotify isn't running

2. Remove the folders $HOME/.config/spotify/ and $HOME/.cache/spotify

3. Reinstall spotify from the latest packages

My problem was fixed in one of the recent updates, it's working well on 1.2.56.502 on linux/debian.
