Just had a conversation with support, their answer:
"We don't have a Spotify app for Linux and we don't officially support devices running on Linux OS."

Then they linked me to https://www.spotify.com/us/download/linux/ where they say "Spotify for Linux is a labor of love from our engineers that wanted to listen to Spotify on their Linux development machines. They work on it in their spare time and it is currently not a platform that we actively support."

When asked whether a fix was planned and, if so, when it would be made available, they responded:

"Don't worry, there will be upcoming fix soon! You can check out this page link for more information: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Linux/Recent-Linux-client-update-changes-2026/td-p/7238778"

Which didn't address the right errors. When asked about it they responded:
"The errors you are seeing (GLIBC_2.38' not found) occur because the latest version of the Spotify client was compiled against a newer version of the GNU C Library (glibc) than what is currently installed on your Linux distribution. Because Spotify for Linux is a community-driven project, it is not officially supported and is often built on newer dependencies that older or "Long Term Support" (LTS) distributions do not yet have. This specific error typically means your OS version is slightly behind the requirements of the current Spotify build. Recommended Solutions by my team: - Use the Flatpak Version: This is the most common fix for dependency errors. Flatpak packages include all necessary libraries (like GLIBC_2.38) within the container, so they run regardless of your system's native libraries. You can find it on Flathub. - Switch to the Snap Client: Similar to Flatpak, the Snap version of Spotify bundles its own dependencies and often bypasses version mismatch issues found in standard .deb or .rpm packages. - The Web Player: If you need immediate access without troubleshooting system libraries, the Spotify Web Player provides the full Premium experience through your browser and is unaffected by local library versions."

Lastly when asked if a fix is coming up:
"The fix is already planned for this error. As per our tech folks, there will be an update next year so stay tune!"

As paying customers, I think it's safe to say that we are not entitled to any rights regarding this specific version of Spotify software, only the officially supported ones. Given that the client worked most of the time, it's easy to forget the single paragraph on the download page. On the other hand, it's still frustrating when software you use every day suddenly stops working and you realize that you weren't entitled to it working in the first place.

After updating spotify-client to the latest version 1.2.77.358.g4339a634 from https://repository.spotify.com stable/non-free application won't launch:

./spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by ./spotify)

This is a problem, because a lot of Linux systems use GLIBC 2.36 (Debian stable, Ubuntu LTS, POP_OS! LTS) and do not have this version.

The only option for many Linux users for now is to stay on the older version (or use flatpack)

Regards!

CJ

It's broken on LMDE 6 "Faye" as well (not surprising since it's based on Debian 12). Really disappointing that this breaking change was rolled out without warning (honestly, it should never have been made available to Bookworm-derived distributions) and frustratingly I can't roll back (reinstalling the older version from the Faye repo crashes now with a core dump and I lack the skills to debug it).
