The fact this has gone on as long as it has says a lot about Spotify. They may say they do not officially support Linux, but do they officially want to have Linux users as paying customers? I accept that Linux is a much smaller market than Windows and macOS, but it's not as small as it used to be and, in any case, I imagine that we contribute enough to Spotify's coffers not to warrant the degree of uninterest or indifference that they have demonstrated.

Spotify is not a necessity, it is a convenience (when it is working). Software that doesn't work is not convenient. I am not going to install awful, bloated containerised apps / packages: I want a native package. I am not expecting Linux to be put on an equal footing with Windows in their development team or considerations. I am not expecting them to hire dedicated Linux developers that spend their entire working days solely focused on the client for Linux distributions. I am not even expecting them to make Linux an officially supported desktop; as much as I would like that, I accept if they do not wish to introduce the potential liabilities that come with that as things stand. But I do expect them to try to actually bother keeping us as customers: by taking a degree of greater care in their packaging for Linux (e.g., specifying the dependencies for their package and considering the dependencies available on LTS releases of distributions they are packaging for, etc.). And I do expect Spotify to not only permit but expect their developers to fix on paid time major problems with their Linux clients when they make mistakes that break it (especially when I expect it wouldn't take a huge number of work hours to fix the problem).

Does Spotify want our money or not? If so, they could at least attempt to make it look like they do.

For now I have downgraded to 1.2.74.477 thanks to those here that have linked to the .deb package hosted elsewhere. I will give Spotify another month to fix their client in the Debian repository so that those of us still using supported versions of a major family of Linux distributions can get back up to date. If they don't bother, I will take the message and cancel my long-held Premium subscription.

After updating spotify-client to the latest version 1.2.77.358.g4339a634 from https://repository.spotify.com stable/non-free application won't launch:

./spotify: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by ./spotify)

This is a problem, because a lot of Linux systems use GLIBC 2.36 (Debian stable, Ubuntu LTS, POP_OS! LTS) and do not have this version.

The only option for many Linux users for now is to stay on the older version (or use flatpack)

Regards!

CJ

It's broken on LMDE 6 "Faye" as well (not surprising since it's based on Debian 12). Really disappointing that this breaking change was rolled out without warning (honestly, it should never have been made available to Bookworm-derived distributions) and frustratingly I can't roll back (reinstalling the older version from the Faye repo crashes now with a core dump and I lack the skills to debug it).
