Plan

Premium

Country

US

Device

Dell XPS

Operating System

Windows 10

My Question or Issue

The local files aren't working. The names, artist name, album name etc. are all greyed out in my playlists. The songs were able to play for a good while after I added them initially, but just randomly today they are suddenly all greyed out. They didn't show up in my local files folder, so I changed the source of the local files, thinking that was the issue. Even after changing it and changing it back, and closing/reopening spotify, the only thing that changed was that the local files could be played in the local files tab in Spotify. The ones in my playlists still are all greyed out, and when I try to add them to my queue, Spotify says that I have to import them (even though I can literally play the songs through the local files tab?). I haven't downloaded illegally, and some of my older local files still work. Those older songs also had this problem initially, yet since it was just a few I didn't see too much of an issue and just removed/readded them into the playlist. But recently I added a huge slew of local file songs, and with this problem it's become really an annoyance to keep on removing/readding them.

It might not be too big of an issue, but I just feel like this is becoming quite annoying, and even after searching online I came up with no proper solution. All I want to do is link up the local files from my playlists with the files on my computer, so that I ideally don't have to keep removing my songs and replacing them. Any help is appreciated.

And if I'm being honest, I don't understand why local files are still so badly done. There are so many bugs and issues, like the fact that I literally cannot import from more than one source, or the whole slew of problems on your forums that never seem to be solved. Why do users have to download their own codecs for an application that they are paying for? Of course, I'm not Mr. Spotify, but if he really does exist, my suggestion would be this: maybe get a few more programmers to stop mulling over the fancy auto-generated playlists and wraps from complex sorting algorithms and instead make them fix bugs that haven't been solved for nearly half a decade. It might seem like this user base that utilizes local files isn't one that is prioritized by Spotify, but if I'm being honest, that's just scummy. Why include a feature that barely works half the time? At this rate, I don't even need to sign up for another music application to get an upgrade, I'll just play it on the (godforsaken) Window's Media player. It'll function better than whatever is happening in Spotify.

Hey there @jademareces,

Thank you for your post and feedback.

Thank you for your post here in the Community. We're sorry to hear that you experience this. We're happy to help.

These files must exist on the device, either Even though some other file types might work, these are the ones that the feature is designed to work with:

.mp3

.m4p (unless it contains video)

.mp4 (if QuickTime is installed on your computer)

.m4a (unless it’s an Apple lossless file; ALAC or ALE)

It would also be great if you can perform a clean reinstall of the app. This will make sure there's no old cache files causing this.

If that doesn't do the trick - can you send us a screen recording?

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Cheers!
