"Unable to update" - Spotify desktop app, despite meeting system requirements

My Question or Issue

Since yesterday, this thing shows whenever I open the profile menu

And whenever I click the "unable to update" option it shows me this

(in Polish, couldn't catch an English screenshot) Your Windows operating system requires an upgrade. Update your Windows operating system to use the most recent Spotify features.

I have the most recent Windows 10 version available (22H2) and the Spotify requirements say "Windows 10 or newer".

Also, this doesn't happen on the Windows 10 app, however due to some problems with that app I need to use the desktop app instead.

Any way to fix this? I've tried reinstalling Spotify, and nothing helped

Small note: the app still works as usual

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

Since the error message mentions a Windows update, we'd recommend first checking if your Windows version has any pending update. To do so, select Start > Control Panel > Security > Security Center > Windows Update in Windows Security Center and select View Available Updates. This way, the system will automatically check if there's any update that needs to be installed, and display the updates that can be installed onto your computer.

After checking the updates, we'd recommend also performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps in this article. This is often an overlooked step, but it’s more thorough than a quick one and can be helpful in getting rid of any cache that might be causing trouble.

Same issue. Spotify was working just dandy yesterday but today I'm getting this same popup. Windows is fully updated with the newest update literally installed last night.

I'm using the latest Windows 10 build as of 2/25/2023.

Reinstalled Spotify today and popup still appears. I've tried both the direct download through Spotify's website and the Spotify app through the Windows App store and they both have the pop up appearing. Is Spotify going to stop supporting Windows 10 OS now? 😓

Just to make sure we're on the same page, have you tried the clean reinstall process mentioned previously? If not, you can do it by following the steps mentioned in this article.

We appreciate the info you've sent so far. To continue investigating this issue, would you mind checking if the Web Player shows you the same behavior or not? This will help us understand more about the issue.

Also, it would be great if @great_mat could include their Spotify version as well to see if it could be related to a recent change.

Lastly, if you're using the desktop version downloaded from the Spotify page, we'd recommend trying the one from the Microsoft store to check if it makes any difference and vice versa.

Is there any way to disable the "windows is out of date" message? I have windows 7 and don't plan to update anytime soon. I know I have a old version so I dont need to see that message every time I start Spotify.

The web app works just fine with no errors or the out of date pop-up, but the windows store app gives the same error. Everything about Spotify works fine aside from the error and the fact that it says I can't update. 🤔

I'm the only one in the household with a Spotify account so I made a temporary account with a new email. Signed in with it on my PC and had the same pop up.

Last night I had a new optional update for Windows that I installed and afterwards the pop-up still appeared but oddly enough, I decided to try the windows app version again and that version no longer has the pop up. Not sure what changed but at least the pop up is gone in the windows store version.

Every time I open Spotify a reminder update for Windows appears on the screen, it delays the opening of the app a lot.

It's not possible for everyone to update Windows to the latest operating system. You may be working in software that is not yet compatible with later operating systems. I pay for Spotify and shouldn't have to see this popup every time I launch the app. How to remove it?

I can't find any way to contact Spotify Support.

Go to: AppData\Local\Spotify\Browser\Local Storage\leveldb

Delete everything inside of it, it will be re-created when you launch spotify, it should remove the message. If you want, set it to read only aftewards, shouldn't hurt anything to do so or the message will popup again over time.

I am having the same problem. Windows 11 Pro, latest updates are installed. OS build is 22000.1641.

Ran the clean install steps for Spotify suggested here, still gives me a "Windows is out of date" error on startup and an "Unable to Update" message in the drop-down accessed by clicking my username in the program.

When I start Spotify, the program shows a blank screen for about 45 seconds before populating and showing the "Windows is out of date" error message. Computer is an i9 with 64GB of ram, so not a horsepower issue on that front.

Downloaded installer from Spotify.com, version is:

Spotify for Windows
1.2.6.863.ge7902f05

This is the answer I was awaiting from the Spotify support. But they just say something useless, like "It's not possible".

It IS possible. And you, SUPPORT, should have known that better than us, simple users. But you either don't know or just don't care, which is very unprofessional.

Not to mention the fact that it is very stupid and insulting idea to have this banner in the first place. It can be shown unobtrusively in the update menu only, or just once, but not every launch.

Your users are not stupid, if they are staying on Windows 7, it is for a reason. And to flash your stupid banner into somebody's face intrusively, repeatedly is insulting.

Had this problem for months and unfortunately this fix only worked for a short time for me. Eventually i found the problem for me. I ran spotify in compatibility modus. When i unchecked it and restarted, the "Windows out of date" messege didnt appear anymore and the unable to update was gone to.

To check if your settings were set tot compatibility modus.

1. rightclick on the spotify icon and click properties

2. click the compatibility tab

3. uncheck compatibility mode

4. restart your pc

Hopefully this fixes your problem like it did for me.

I get this message for windows and I have a Mac. What is going on? And, my Mac matches the requirements. What is the issue then? (Already did reinstall hasn’t worked)
