I have tried using a vpn and not using one changing my dns checking the host files in the system32/drivers/etc folder for anything regrading Spotify rebooted my router and also tried it with my phones hotspot. there was even a long complicated forum post here using some app called XAMPP to fix it and that didn't work too. this is so weird Spotify was legit working a couple of hours ago I tried re installing and this happened.
I would also like to add that the web player works I'm listening and using it as I write this post also the app works on my phone too. any help is appreciated and thank you.

Hi there,

Welcome to the Community and thanks for reaching out!

I'd recommend changing your default browser to a different one to see if the same error would occur.

If it does, you can check your hosts file for any entries with spotify or fastly in the address and delete them (as well as any other unusual entries you spot). You'll find a detailed guide on how to edit the hosts file here.

Cheers!

This is not a hosts problem. This seems to be a problem with the way the default browser is calling the local Spotify app to open.

I Fixed this by copying the URL (see additional notes below) from my browser window that opened, into a completely different browser.

I was prompted to login to my Spotify account, then it opened the Spotify desktop app correctly.

The URL isn't the one starting with 127.0.0.1
The URL is first URL when you're prompted to login to your account. It should be something like:
https://accounts.spotify.com/en/oauth2/v2/auth?referral=spotifyweb-windows10-store-feb18&utm_campaign=spotifyweb-windows10-store-feb18&scope=app-remote-control%2Cplaylist-modify%2Cplaylist-modify-private%2Cplaylist-modify-public%2Cplaylist-read%2Cplaylist-read-collaborative%2Cplaylist-read-private%2Cstreaming%2Cugc-image-upload%2Cuser-follow-modify%2Cuser-follow-read%2Cuser-library-modify%2Cuser-library-read%2Cuser-modify%2Cuser-modify-playback-state%2Cuser-modify-private%2Cuser-personalized%2Cuser-read-birthdate%2Cuser-read-currently-playing%2Cuser-read-email%2Cuser-read-play-history%2Cuser-read-playback-position%2Cuser-read-playback-state%2Cuser-read-private%2Cuser-read-recently-played%2Cuser-top-read&utm_medium=desktop-win32-store&response_type=code&flow_ctx=7a8feddf-d71b-46c7-b5fc-395554d2ee9e%3A134578909&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2F127.0.0.1%3A4381%2Flogin&code_challenge_method=S256&client_id=66m708073fc0480ea92a093233ca87bd&code_challenge=MY121KCjkjjX9guwlWEHl2YQFTTucnmigs9ez1RZhKo&ut47m_source=spotify&creation_point=https%3A%2F%2Flogin.app.spotify.com%2F%3Fclient_id%3D65b336594fc0480ea92a0361ca51bd%26utm_source%3Dspotify%26utm_medium%3Ddesktop-win32-store%26utm_campaign%3Dspotifyweb-windows10-store-feb18%26referral%3Dspotifyweb-windows10-store-feb18

You may know or may not but the computers using a special IP address called localhost and it is IP is 127.0.0.1 and there are different ports ranging from 0 to 60k numbers and in that situation Spotify is trying to connect to your computer locally (127.0.0.1) but failing. In case wondering about the localhost, you may learn here more: https://meaning.bot/what+are+ip+addresses+127.0.0.1:49342,+57573,+and+62893/

Turning back to your question again, this usually happens due to issues with proxies, VPNs, or firewalls.

I can recommend you to do the followings:

If you’re using a VPN or have a proxy set up, try disabling them. These can sometimes block Spotify’s connection.

Clear the cache in your browser or the Spotify app. Sometimes old data can cause this kind of issue.

Temporarily turn off your firewall or antivirus software. They can sometimes block Spotify from connecting properly.

If none of the above work, try reinstalling the Spotify app. This will reset any settings or files that might be causing the problem.
