no icon on task bar

My Question or Issue

Installed via microsoft store and Spotify icon just don't show up in task bar even when it is running. It's just blank. It has no problem in any other places as in folders or start menu.

Does any one know how to fix?

Hey @eikan!

That's strange. Usually, a clean reinstall would fix that.

I've got something you can try:

With Spotify open,

Open Task Manager (Control + Shift + Escape)
Find 'Windows Explorer' (if you don't have a File Explorer window open, it's typically near the bottom of the list)
Highlight 'Windows Explorer' (single click), and select 'Restart'

Hopefully restarting Windows Explorer while having Spotify open will remedy this issue.

Also, please let me know what version of Spotify you're on. You can find this information by selecting the Meatball Menu in the top left corner of Spotify, selecting Help > About Spotify.

You can easily copy this information to the clipboard by clicking this button.

If none of the steps above help, if you'd like, you're welcome to install the EXE straight from Spotify.

Hi, problem reoccur when spotify do something. It shows pop up something like 'migrating data' and then icon disappears again, and when I check microsoft store, spotify is 'installed'. When I use EXE to install, ms store shows 'install'

Could you completely uninstall and delete Spotify from the Microsoft Store and then download it again directly via our website? We also recommend double-checking for any left over files from when you installed it via the MS store, so they don't cause any issues.

The version from the MS store and the one from our website can have different behavior so it's worth using only the one from our website to see if the issue would persist.

Hello, I found no left over files in WindowsApp from MS store. Is there any other place to look for left over?

I strongly believe this will be fixed if I can block MS store from snatching Spotify which I installed via EXE from your website. Do you know how I could do this?

Hey there,

It is actually not that hard to check. Here in this article you can follow steps to show you how to check for residual files. I`ll leave these steps here but if needed you can complete the entire workflow:

On the Start search bar, type %AppData% and hit enter. This should open up AppData\Roaming.
In the new window that opens up make sure there's no Spotify folder showing up. If there is, you can delete it.
Make sure that there is no Spotify folder left in AppData\Local (or C:\Users\*USERNAME*\AppData\Local\Spotify\Storage) as well.

Hey @eikan,

Thanks for letting us know!

The issue might be hiding in the cached data of Windows itself.
To check if this is the case, try the following steps:

Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folder: C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer.
> In this folder, you will find several files that start with iconcache_. Select all of these files and delete them.
> Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, Windows will rebuild the Icon cache and hopefully fix any issues with the Taskbar icons.

Just to be sure it still doesn't fix the issue completely, could you give Spotify a clean reinstall once again with the steps here then also follow @Vasil's steps in the last response once more?

An additional step you can do is to then go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program and check if Spotify appears there.

After that, install Spotify only from our website and if you still see 'migrating data' or any other issue/message and the app's icon is missing, send us a screenshot or two so we can take a look.

This was definitely the case. Downloading direct from Spotify solved it for me.
