spotify jam is not working between two desktop apps

My girlfriend and i want to listen to spotify while we work, we do not live together, we both have spotify premium. when we connect and start a jam on the desktop apps, spotify does not play the same song for each of us, but instead continues to play whatever was playing before, and neither of us can hear what the other has playing.
