Installer doesn't install

I just downloaded the SpotifySetup executable (for Windows, Windows 11 Pro 64-bit version 24H2 build 26100.3037, to be precise). It said it was for Spotify version 1.2.56.502.ga68d2d4f. You can check that in the Windows file properties on the downloaded file. The version number is on the Details tab of the Properties dialog. I executed the installer. It went through the process saying it was downloading whatever, then installing whatever, then Spotify opened. To check that I had version 1.2.56.502.ga68d2d4f, I opened About Spotify. I was astonished to see that I was still running version 1.2.55.235.g5eaa0904 & it said I should "click here" to download the new version. What? I just did that! And the install appeared to run successfully. But quite evidently it did nothing. Only clicking the "click here" button within the About Spotify box actually updated Spotify. That seems to be the only thing that works. Well, that's just silly. I ended up downloading the thing twice for no good reason. The installer needs to actually INSTALL. I went to the trouble of getting the new version myself. That installer should install what I downloaded. This is a rather silly state of affairs.

Well, this has been completely ignored. Oh well. In any case, I just got the new version 1.2.57.463.g4f748c64. By "got" I mean I downloaded it from Spotify onto my hard drive & executed the installer. What do you know? When it was done & it opened Spotify, presto, it was the new version. Must have been a bug in the 1.2.56.502.ga68d2d4f installer that they quietly fixed in the current 1.2.57.463.g4f748c64 installer . . . without acknowledging my problem report. Well, that's OK. As long as the problem doesn't occur again.

Thanks for getting in touch about this here in the Community. Apologies for the delayed reply, we just came across this thread.

Could you let us know if you downloaded the app from our website or from the Microsoft Store when this issue happened? Also, keep in mind that when there is a new update available, you will see a blue dot next to your profile picture in the upper right corner of the app. You just need to click on it and choose the Update Spotify now option and it'll update the app automatically.

On another note, it's great to know that this has been fixed for you. If it occurs again, let us know and we'll be here to help.

I always use the link labeled "Download directly from Spotify." I like to have install executables of all my applications. Spotify is only one such example. In case of some sort of disaster in which I would have to recover my entire system (has never happened but I'm paranoid), I have all the necessary installers already on my hard drives somewhere. The most important such is, of course, Firefox. You can't download from a web site if you don't have a browser, right? So I can recover the system, execute the Firefox installer I already have, & then I can go from there. Same idea with Spotify. I don't have to go find it; I already have it.

Before I'm going to open Spotify & listen to music, I am in the habit of checking for a new version of Spotify. When there is one, as there was yesterday, I download it & install it. This short circuits the blue dot business you describe, except for that one release. It has always worked in the past, & it has now worked on the latest one. So things are good. We're hoping it stays that way.

There is one bit of strangeness. You'll note that the URL I quote above is German. There's a qualifier de-en in it. When I try to use this link:

https://www.spotify.com/en-en/download/windows/

It gives me a page not found error. I am not in Germany. I don't even speak German. But that's the page I found for downloading Spotify. In fact, I clicked the link you provided & it redirected to a page with the de-en qualifier, same as the one I quote above. Despite the alleged German locale, the web page is actually in English. This seems really weird. But as long as it works, I don't really care.

Just now I tried this link:

It also redirects to a page not found page. That page also claims to be German. The word "Deutschland" appears at the top of the page despite the page containing only English text. The entire Spotify web site seems to want to send everybody to Germany. It's totally weird.

Looks like the issue with the installer was fixed in 1.2.57. Thanks for the feedback 👍

As for the letters following the domain https://spotify.com/, the former group indicates the region of the webpage, while the latter indicates the language. So, in https://spotify.com/de-en/download/ "de" signifies the region Germany, and "en" causes the webpage to be displayed in English.

The link https://www.spotify.com/en-us/download/windows/ leads to nowhere since the syntax is wrong. The correct one would be just https://www.spotify.com/us/download/windows/.

Tip: you can change the region of the Spotify website from this menu, located at the bottom-right corner of the webpage, or by heading here.

As for your other question about using @ to ping users, you can copy the link to the user's profile and hyperlink the text, that should do the trick.

@Yordon Aha! OK, I think I got it. Seems like a lot of work. On other forums, you just type @name & the web site creates the link automatically.

As for the region, I have no idea how I ended up in Germany in the first place. But your explanation of the qualifier in the URL helped. I took de-en as a pattern & tried other things with a hyphen. It never occurred to me that a one-part qualifier with no hyphen might work. I've got it fixed in my bookmarks now. When I go to the download page, it won't mention Germany any more.

Your explanation of the thing in the bottom right corner had me a bit confused for a moment. Then I realized the community is kind of a separate web site. The link for the country does not exist on our discussion page here. That link is on pages on the Spotify web site itself. But now that I know about it, I'll probably never use it again. I've set my country to USA & I will probably never want to change that.

For me it didn't work if I downloaded it from Firefox or chrome, but it does from edge. Hope this helps!
