I have the same issue in 2026, removing sudo to winget solves it

-> sudo winget update Spotify

to
winget update Spotify

which would also work to run a terminal that is not Administrator
In addition please add a noIcon Option, after a update by winget , there is always a new icon on the desktop

Plan

Free

Country

NL

Device

Desktop

Operating System

Windows 11

My Question or Issue

There is an issue updating Spotify with the winget.exe CLI-app; it is always stated that Spotify cannot be updated this way, issuing the message that it is not possible to update with administrator rights. I do not know, but, indeed, I am working through my administrator account on Windows. But now it is about the rights of the Spotify installer, right? I am a bit surprised also, for, mostly, sometimes there can be issues about not elevated rights, but now it is the other way around, seemingly, so there ARE elevated rights. And now they are part of the problem.

Meanwhile, there are no issues at all while updating (any) other apps through this mechanism. Most of the times, I am using the following CLI-command specifically: winget upgrade -r -u, for updating everything available on the winget server. But, regarding Spotify, the result is always the same - so, not right -, no matter how winget is used.

I want to stress here that this is on the Windows platform, for, I have seen many posts here concerning winget on the Linux platform.

Lastly, I have already tried to solve this through the Windows Feedback hub, but, so far, without a result or solution whatsoever.

Adding this: Meanwhile, I am using UniGetUI for updating apps and not using winget anymore, most of the times. But, while this update credential problem of Spotify has gone now, still Spotify opens automatically after updating with UniGetUI. Why? Only Spotify does this, so all the other (lot of) apps updated with UniGetUI don't.
