Spotify keeps opening during start up

I've checked everything. My settings say "Don't Open Automatically." I'm a power user so I also know about msconfig. Spotify isn't listed as a startup program.

This is really upsetting me. I think this happened after an update, and it gives me the impression that Spotify is trying to maliciously force me to use it at all times, which makes me tempted to uninstall until this is resolved.

Please help me in resolving this issue please.

I noticed this when Spotify auto-updated itself as well. What I did back then was to change the settings in the Spotify app to open on startup and then change it back to not open on startup. That seemed to work. I might have also tweaked the "icon" setting. My apologies for the lack of clarity -- it's been a while.

Due to other shortcomings of the new client update, I went back to using the older client. It's far more enjoyable. As Spotify is undergoing a massive overhaul to basically become a spam engine for Hollywood and other big money record labels, I'm enjoying this old client while it lasts. I know it's an ephemeral thing. As many good things are.

At this point, it's become insulting and malicious. What I tried was to tell spotify to go ahead and startup, and then I used msconfig to deny the program from starting up.

Spotify sketchily started up anyway. I uninstalled the program. On uninstall, my anti-malware program notified me that spotify was trying to duplicate itself. That's reproducable behavior by the way. I have screenshots.

I told the malware to stop the process and quarantine it, and then proceeded to uninstall it.

At this point, Spotify has really lost my trust and I'm not gonna reinstall it for awhile, and unfortunately I can no longer give good recommendations to my collagues. It was nice while it lasted. Kudos to the engineers for being able to program such malicious behavior.

I am not surprised at your experience. The Spotify client has become more invasive and obnoxious in its behavior. The Spotify execs probably want to prevent what I and many others are doing -- installing an old version of the client and blocking the auto-update mechanism. There was one Spotify user who referred to this as "0.8.5 Final" as it would be last version of Spotify that he would ever install on his system.

I'm never going to run the new 0.8.8.* client. It's a pile of junk that has ads/promotions/spams even for Premium customers. Fortunately, there are ways to go back to the 0.8.5 client for both Windows and Mac and block the updates. Thanks to the awesome people we have in the Spotify community. It's a shame Spotify is turning their back on their existing customers, many of whom are serious music lovers, in their pursuit of getting billions of users.

Same here.

Incredibly annoying and yes, it's turned of in Spotify prefs. Along with do not start from web.

Did a 100% uninstall and clean install - problem persists.

Might be time to go back to Pandora, or Rradio, or iTunes, or...

Do you use Growl? I've seen reports before that it launches Spotify for some reason.

Could you also try:

Open the System Preferences of your Mac.
Select accounts in the lower left.
Click Login Items to bring up a list of all applications that run when you startup.
Highlight the application you want to remove and press the "-" button at the bottom of the list. Note that the application will disappear and not run on your next reboot.

The same happens with me on the Windows platform, and I have changed the settings on both Windows and Spotify without results.

Too bad. There are a lot of nice people that like music out there. Since Spotify has taken away the ability to communicate with those individuals and seems to be malicious in its use of my computer, I guess it is time to uninstall a use another program unless the problem is fixed once and for all.
