I only add albums to the queue and listen to those. Like I did with Iron Maiden, but now it's the only thing that's in "next up" after the queue gets played through. That's what my problem was.

However, your answer actually did reveal the solution.

So, if I go to an artist's page and click on any one song, it just auto fills the next up list with songs exclusively from that artist, no matter how many hours, days, months, years worth of music I listen to through the play queue, the next up list will only change if I go to an artist page and click on a song. And even then it will keep playing the same artist throughout eternity if I don't go click on another artist's song. Unless, I go to a playlist and click on a song there. In which case it will do ... something? ... nothing? after the playlist ends.

So, user error. I had a different logic in mind that I thought the program should use. I figured that if I purposefully queue songs to prioritize them over the stuff Spotify lists, it would eventually learn my music taste and start suggesting songs from similar artists in the next up list.

T

Plan

Premium

Country

Finland

Operating System

Windows 7 Enterprise

My Question or Issue

Whenever I finish listening to the queued songs in my play queue, Spotify always starts playing Iron Maiden's debut album and every song in the "Next up" list, is also Iron Maiden. Is there a way to get Spotify to start playing something different than Iron Maiden after my play queue goes empty?

Background:

I pretty much exclusively listen to full albums and about 2 months ago I listened through almost the entire production of Iron Maiden. I'm not the biggest fan of their music so I'd like to have the "Next up" section have something else in it than Maiden. I'd like there to be songs from artists I actually like, and maybe have it play something like the songs in the discover playlists. I've had a listen through 5 other artist's full productions since listening to Maiden's albums, but still the list insists on only playing them.

PLS HALP!

Cheers,

T

Hey @tekamoto

If I understand correctly, when you hit play on any artist or playlist (so that their music appears in the Next Up, not the Next In Queue), and when the last song finishes, Spotify goes back to Iron Maiden?

It shouldn't really do that.

I'd recommend clean reinstall to refresh your client. Just follow this:

1. Close Spotify and uninstall it.
2. Go to %AppData% in Windows Explorer, and delete any Spotify folders you find in Local and Roaming folders.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Install Spotify.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

@tekamoto

Oh 🙂

There are a few features that may be able to give you what you need:

You can try turning on Autoplay, that will play songs similar to the music you already listened. This article gives a bit more information as well as teach how to enable it.

Another feature you can try out is song / album / playlist / artist radios. This way you'll get songs from similar artists as well! Read this to learn more.

Next Up however is not a part of Autoplay, it's more like a list that automatically fills up with the playlist / album / artist you hit Play on. Music added to Play Queue will be in Next In Queue and will be played first.

Next Up will loop the playlist / artist / album you clicked Play on forever (when the list ends, then it'll just stop playback, and it will re-begin the same list when you start playback again).

Spotify algorithms do their magic in Daily Mixes, Discover Weekly and Release Radar as well as some other playlists. In the desktop client there's a section called Made For You which holds all of these in one spot.

Hope this helps; if you have more questions, just reply to me 🙂
