Can't skip songs using keyboard keys, using Spotify app on laptop

My issue has been happening for a while but for some reason I will have it sometimes and then other times I won't, it's really weird. I have the Spotify app downloaded on my laptop, I'm not using it on Chrome or Safari. So I will be working on a college project listening to music and I will try and skip a song using the keyboard keys or I will try and pause it, sometimes I'm able to and other times I have to go into the Spotify app and click to pause or skip a song using the buttons in Spotify, I can't even use my keyboard keys while in the app sometimes. Please help me, this issue is so annoying.
