I had this same problem (Spotify worked fine before, but then one day the music became muffled and tunnel-like). I tried changing many of the recommended options with no noticeable change, until I did the following: On the Spotify window, click on the "Connect to Device" icon in lower right corner (computer icon that is to the left of the volume icon). Reselect the device that you are listening to and the sound quality will instantly return to normal. I don't know why I needed to do this, but this is what worked for me.

Why is the audio quality so bad with the dekstop application? Everything else on my desktop sounds fine, but Spotify sounds horrible. I have High Quality Streaming checked and I've cleared the cache folder and restarted, no help.

hmm...it looks like everything should be able to handle Spotify.

I recommend reaching out directly to Spotify Support. They can be reached through their Twitter Page @SpotifyCares or through the online contact form.

Make sure to check your inbox and junk folder for an email from Spotify. Once you get it, make sure to reply back right away, even if it says it's from a "no-reply" email. This will assign your case to a Spotify rep and you should hear back within 24 hours.

Cheers!
