Ok, so I downloaded spotify to reinstall it, as it stopped working.

First I got a windows error, that terminated the program. Then I couldn't uninstall it, as I got another windows error.

Then I tried to download it and reinstall it, but I got error 50 (no internet) and after retry error 4 (corrupt). I am very frustrated.

I tried:

Install in windows safe mode

Disable MS firewall

Disable MS Security Essentials

Different browsers (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)

All without success. I think it has something to do with Apple Bonjour, as I removed it and after that, my sonos app (which is connected to spotify) and the spotify app stopped working. I can reinstall the sonos app fine, but it won't start.

I do not know what to do now, so I need help. Can anyone suggest a solution other than reinstalling windows?

Hey there @Tieske_sommers,

Thank you for reaching out to us in the Community.

Can you try the following:

Remove host files:

Open Notepad as an administrator (right-click - Open as Administrator)

go to File - Open and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Choose "All Files" instead of "Text Documents" next to the File Name box. You'll see a handful of files. Pick hosts and click on Open

When the file is open, you will see a block of text with # in front of each line and might see entries like 0.0.0.0 website.com127.0.0.1 website2.com

Check for any entries with Spotify in the address. Examples may look like: 0.0.0.0 weblb-wg.gslb.spotify.com0.0.0.0

If you do find any lines with Spotify, please remove them

Save your changes and restart Spotify

Switching to another internet connection (Wi-Fi, mobile data via tethering, or going direct via LAN cable)

Let us know how everything goes so that we can keep on assist you if you need us to. We're always one reply away.

Cheers!

unfortunately that didn't resolve it.

In the hosts file, there was no entry, only localhost at 127.0.0.1 and : : 1 and this was all hashed.

Tried to tether my phone, which did not change a thing. Disabled my wired network connection and my computer kept internet, but spotify still says error 50 when I try to install it.

My wired connection is 1Gbit and is fast. Internal file transfer is over 100MByte/sec and my internet connection is 250Mbit, which I reach with over 25Mbyte/second download. Should be more than enough.

Hi again @Tieske_sommers,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

We'd recommend making sure that you're not using a VPN, as this could cause issues with the app.

If you're using an Antivirus or a firewall, make sure these aren't blocking Spotify in any way.

Keep us posted. We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Nope, no VPN, no firewall, no antivirus. All turned off.

I think it has something to do with that the install file needs something to check for an internet connection which is missing.

This is what happens:

I download the installer from the spotify page. I get a security warning, saying "Do you want to run this file?". I choose Run. (standard windows message)

Then only a very brief moment, less than half a second, it opens a window, but it immediately switches to the error message. The first window after Run is just a flickering. I get the error message right away.

Ok, I already did that of course. There should be no trace in the registry or anywhere else on my harddrive of my previous install.

I cannot run the installer as administrator, because as you know, the installer will give a message that it needs to be installed as a regular user.

Please let me know which checks it does when it fails with error code 50. Which services it requires, which routines it uses to check for an internet connection. Then I can make sure that I have those running and we will start getting somewhere.

I am getting a feeling, other then the first reply, that I am at the helpdesk level "please turn the computer off and on again".

Please level me up a little.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply.

We'd recommend disabling SmartScreen to see if you notice anything new. To disable it, start Internet Explorer. Then, click the Tools button or press ALT+X on your keyboard. In the menu that opens, go to Safety and then click “Turn off SmartScreen Filter".

Once you've downloaded Spotify again, feel free to reactivate SmartScreen and let us know how it goes.
