Found in another post that turning on 'offline mode' in the settings works. It seems to have worked for me. Disables video, however.

I'm using the spotify app on android. I can't find this elusive offline button. Where is it located?

From the home screen of the app, tap the gear/cog settings icon in the top right corner. The very second switch from the top should be labeled "Offline mode".

The second switch for me is gapless
