Spotify keeps pausing when using Facebook messenger

My Question or Issue

Whenever using FB messenger, spotify keeps pausing playback. It can be unpaused, but it keeps pausing - opening messenger, opening keyboard, etc. Full reinstall (delete all data) of both spotify and messenger has not helped. this is also happening on my fiancee's phone, but I can't find any recent help docs about it.

Yes, Spotify is in the list of "never sleeping" apps in android settings.

In order to investigate further, it would be great if you could try the following steps, as well as share some more info:

Did you notice if this behavior started happening after something specific (an update for example)?
Log out > back in twice in a row both on Spotify and Messenger (for an account resync).
Make sure Spotify is set as an exception if you're using battery optimization.
Turn off any typing sounds, or noises associated with Messenger in the app's settings.
Is this happening with your Spotify account on your fiancée's phone?
Lastly, make sure you've gone over these steps for a clean reinstall if you haven't.
