Why does Spotify require Bluetooth access?

With a message telling me I *need* this to play Spotify on all my devices. But it already plays on anything I connect via Bluetooth. Did they deliberately bork something just to force me to give away more personal info? Why is the explanation so patronising and simultaneously information-free? Just tell me what it's actually for!
