Really? That's odd, it should be directing the sound to your headphones. What phone do you have? Can you check there's nothing in your headphones socket.. fluffy or anything. Try a clean with a cotton bud

Question:
I am new to Spotify and so far LOVE it! The one thing I am interested in doing is plugging my phone into an exteral sound system. I have a "boom box" that has a jack that hooks up to my iPod and plays the songs from it. I have been able to do the same thing with my phone and play music this way. I'd like to know if/how I can do this without having to listen to the songs through my phone. It's also not working when I plug in my earbuds.

Help is MUCH appreciated.

That's another odd thing. I've tried the jack from my headphones, the jack from my "boom box" and neither work. I see the song playing and when I pull the plug, I can hear it through my phone speaker. I've taken the cover off the phone, thinking the jack didn't get pushed in all the way and it still didn't play through external speakers 😞
Its an Android Razr HD version 4.4.2 if that makes a difference.

Sounds silly, but have you pressed volume up while the headphones are in?

Also go to android settings and then open sounds. There may be a section for sound levels, open tuus and check all are up

OK, so tried both of those and it al appears to be working fine. I took the earbuds and put them into my PC jack and could hear the music through them. Would it have anything to do with downloading music? Do I have to playback from something other than the app directly? I guess what I really am trying to do is playlists (that need to change practically every week) for my spin class and wanting to run it through my phone using the stereo setup at the gym. The members get tired of the music pretty quickly and I need something that I can change easily. I have tried hooking my phone to the iPod jack at the gym as well...nothing. Yet I can play emailed music that gets downloaded.

Shouldn't be an issue. And if you use your headphones with another app such as the stock music player it all works fine?

I guess your best bet may be too try a clean installation (link in my thread for how to) as it may just be a corrupt installation of the app.

So I reinstalled the app and I have nothing with the headphones through my phone. Could it be a simple setting? What about the download option? Do I need to download a playlist and play it from a different location on my phone instead of through Spotify?

I have a very strong suspicion some dirt or lint is lodged in your headphones jack. Do you feel the clunk that should happen when the jack is fully inserted? If you use a torch can you see if anything is there? Lastly, can you use a cotton bud or pipe cleaner and gently twist it round to dislodge anything in there then shake it out?
