Save to External SD Card

Hi,

I know this has been covered loads of times but I still haven't found an answer that works for me.

I have an Android Tablet and I want to download my playlists to my external 32GB SD card instead of taking up the small amount of memory on the internal storage.

I saw ages ago that Spotify was supposed to choose the location with the most space to save offline playlists to, but this has never worked for me.

Back in 2013 I contacted support and was told that my tablet was unusual in the way that the storage was set up and that confused the software and there was nothing that could be done about it.

Really my tablet has 2 internal storage locations on it. There's 1GB internal storage and a further 5GB marked as Internal SD Card storage (if this is an actual SD card it's built into the tablet somewhere and is inaccessible). Then I have the external SD slot with my 32GB SD Card.

I still cannot get this to save playlists to my external card.

Any ideas?

Please read the guide linked below for details on the most common issues and how to fix them. Usually a clean install is the first step to take and resolves most of the usual issues; the guide details the steps to take to ensure a full 'clean installation' is achieved - This includes checking redundant folders and a REBOOT!

Thanks Daniel.

Have followed the guide and after uninstalling couldn't find any of the listed files/folders left behind in filemanager and used the search function to check for anything with spotify in it. That found 3 .apk files (old installers?) but nothing else so restarted the tablet and installed Spotify.

Unfortunately it has started to download to the 5gb internal SD rather than the 32gb external SD.

Did you read the tips I gave? Sometimes you need to just force it by immediately after logging in from a clean install change your download settings to 'Extreme' then using a largish playlist set that to 'Offline'

I have read the tips. The guide was more detailed than I've seen before so making sure there were no spotify folders left over was a new one but I couldn't find any of them. The SD card has never been used in any other device. The tablet does recognise that it's there and shows it as 29.71gb or something like that.

I am set up to download in Extreme quality and the playlist I tried is a big one.

It's a tablet.

It's called Fusion5 and the settings screen says it's Model number N81, Android version 4.0.4

Don't think it's with a big brand or anything.

I wonder... Can you try these steps:

Stop Spotify (Settings -> Apps -> Spotify)
Manually create /storage/sdcard1/Android/data
Copy 'com.spotify.music' and all subdirectories from internal storage to '/storage/sdcard1/Android/data'
Open Settings -> Apps -> Spotify then tap 'Clear Data'
Restart Spotify and log back in again
Set Download quality to 'Extreme'
Try downloading a large playlist

I wonder if the paths on this tablet are different from normal cause I can't find the paths thet seem to be on the guide or the ones you point to.

In filemanager com.spotify.music is on /mnt/sdcard/Android/data

There doesn't seem to be a path for internal memory.

Next I've got is /mnt/extsd

And I'm guessing this is for an external hard drive or something /mnt/usbhost1

Yep, definately some weird way of creating the paths...Try this:

extSD is normally the location for a memory card so try the below

Stop Spotify (Settings -> Apps -> Spotify)
Manually create '/mnt/extsd/Android/data'
Copy 'com.spotify.music' and all subdirectories from '/mnt/sdcard/Android/data' to '/mnt/extsd/Android/data'
Open Settings -> Apps -> Spotify then tap 'Clear Data'
Restart Spotify and log back in again
Set Download quality to 'Extreme'
Try downloading a large playlist

Have made the new folder and moved the old contents into it. Cleared data and went into Spotify and it still auto logged me in. So I used the Delete Cache and Saved Data option in Spotify's settings. Then checked in the old internal storage and found com.spotify.music was still in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data so deleted that folder. com.spotify.music is now only on the external SD.

Logged back in to Spotify and set Extreme quality and started a big playlist and it recreated com.spotify.music on the internal storage.

It seems your device is using some odd links. If you're rooted you can try symlinking with apps such as FolderMount

Are there any updates for your device? I'm afraid I think it's the devices way of accessing the file system.

No updates available.

Although the device seems to have a funny way of accessing things, Spotify is still managing so it can't be that far away from what the app expects.

There must be a way to point it in the right direction.
