How does WiFi syncing work? (Ad hoc vs. Internet Connection)

Hi all,

I was curious if anyone knew how exactly Spotify syncs songs over WiFi. Does it do it using an ad-hoc connection similar to Apple Airdrop (where songs are sent from the computer to the router, and then to my phone without ever actually "touching" the internet), or are new songs downloaded to the phone from internet servers?

I work in an area with very limited internet connectivity and want to make sure I'm not using any bandwidth when I'm syncing songs to my android phone.

I'm not actually sure... Spotify hasn't really said how that process works.
