How do I find out if the playlists that I am following on my Android device have been updated?

Check your notification settings within the application. Although notifications don't seem to work very well at the moment for a lot of users.

Thanks, I have checked it and had opted to receive all notifications, so if can't be that. But it did make me wonder if it isn't simply that these particular lists are not ever being updated.

You can see when a playlist was last updated from within the app. Just open the playlist up and swipe the playlist artwork to the left to reveal the second page which gives you more information such as the 'last update' date.
