Can't control Spotify via Bluetooth

Tried connecting to a 2014 Subaru Outback and a 2013 Honda Civic. Bluetooth audio comes through fine and can control Spotify on my phone, but none of the external controls (mainly song skipping) work. Song info (track/album/artist) also doesn't display on the car display, just is blank or says "no info". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Spotify as well as forgetting then re-pairing the phone to the car(s) again.

This started maybe two weeks ago.

Spotify version: 8.4.30.684 armV7

Android version: 8.1.0 (security patch Oct 5 2017)

Phone: Google Pixel XL
