Hey hey! If you're like me who loves to listen to dozens of different artists, genres, and also a bunch of different podcasts and audiobooks, maybe you have already stopped and thought "Wow, my library is becoming a mess!". Of course, you don't need to delete some of your favorite playlists or stop following some of your beloved albums to keep your library organized...

Thinking about this, we're finally back with a fresh new Steps by Stars edition, this time to help you to organize your mess. (p.s: don't worry, my library used to be a mess too, but not anymore, trust me, you're gonna like it...)

Step 1: Sort and Filter

I don't know if you already saw this, but on the top of Your Library, there are some filters like Playlists, Podcasts & Shows, or Artists. This lets you filter your library view just for what you're looking for at that moment, making it easier to help you on finding things. You can also sort the content you're seeing in different ways like Recents, Alphabetical, or Sort by Recents. If nothing of these are sufficient, you can also use the Search tool to find even the most hidden things in your library.

Step 2: Playlists folders

I follow a bunch of different playlists, but I also like to create my own playlists for any different mood I have or for different occasions, maybe. Thinking about that, in order to keep each playlist in its own place, I use folders to separate them all and keep my library organized. I have some folders to group my Made For You playlists (Made For Me, in this case... 😅), like Daily Mixes or my Release Radar.

I also have another folder to save someone else's playlists that I follow and another folder to save my Artists Mixes, another one to save the Collaborative Playlists that I'm in, and last but not least, a folder to save the Blends I created with my friends.

Step 3: Naming and creating covers for your playlists

I like to give some creative names to my playlists, because it gives the idea of exclusivity and makes my playlists more personal, you know? So, for example, I call my playlist of favorite songs Special Selection, my Rock playlist has the name Let's Rock and I also have a playlist for Rap that has the name of TrapBoom, and some other playlists I have, like Classical Mood, RAProject, POParty, #BRock, and Remixing. And to make it even more personal, I like to create some image covers for each playlist. I used Canvas to create mines, but you can choose your preferred service to do this. Just make sure your picture doesn’t violate any copyright, trademark, or personal image rights, ok?

Step 4: Liked Songs and Your Episodes

There are thousands of songs I like and sometimes I don't want to listen to just one genre or one single artist. When I'm in this "everything mood" I like to tap the play button of my Liked Songs. I put all my favorite tracks there, even if the song doesn't fit in any of my personal playlists, and there I can shuffle everything I like in just one tap. And don't worry because there are filters in there to help you find anything you want to.

And if you also like to listen to some podcast shows, there is a specific area you can save your favorite episodes to listen to again in the future, for example. This is the Your Episodes. All the episodes you save will be there and you can filter them by Downloaded, Unplayed, or Continue Listening. With all of this, it's easy managing your episodes, right?

Keeping your library organized gives you time to spend it listening to your favorite content. I hope my suggestions were useful to you! If you have any other tips you follow to keep your library organized, share them with us in the comments, and don't forget to leave your like 🙂

Last, but not least, If you need help, a Spotify Star is here in the community ready to lend you a hand.

See you soon for another edition of the Steps by Stars!

Thanks for this - very helpful.

Disappointingly, though, it only works for playlists.

I tend not to use playlists as I like to listen to albums in their entirety. I know I can save an album to its own playlist, but that seems like an unnecessary step. It would be great if albums could be placed in folders - there seems be no way to tidy them up.

Probably my comment deserves a separate post, but I don’t know how to create a new post (and the blog post on this topic is only yours), so I will write a comment on yours, hoping to start a dialogue and to know the experience of other users.

What you wrote is true and important, but personally I have questions (and complaints about the lack of functionality) even earlier, at the level of the philosophy of bilding the library itself as such. And, I repeat, I would like to know the thoughts and experiences of other users here.

I know that there are two types of music listeners: those for whom the text is primary and the accompaniment is secondary; and vice versa, those who primarily listen to music, and the words are secondary. Personally, I belong to the second category. (I don't know why, but it's a fact) For me, text is just another audio track. When humming, I can easily accidentally substitute other words if they sound the same as the original without even noticing it. "Meaning" I catch from the music itself.

Based on this approach, I developed my personal classification.
For a better understanding, I made a diagram.

Good - tracks that make me feel positive.

“Love from the first note” Agree, there are songs that catch on as soon as you hear them, and then you can listen to them at any time, regardless of mood, weather, situation, and the like. I think everyone has such tracks, the love for which you will carry through your whole life. Remember situations when you are somewhere in your thoughts, and suddenly somewhere on the street you hear one of these tracks, and something inside you instantly switches, goosebumps run through your body, and you start writing with boiling water. 😊😊😊

"For the mood". Most likely you associate these tracks with some event or segment of your life. For example: “Song of the trip”, the song under which you had your first **bleep**, or vice versa, your couple broke up, and these tracks were playing with you at that time. In general, these songs are emotions. For example, you are sad now, and you want to listen only to those tracks that you were sad to before. These tracks are very similar to the first category, but still, if you are in a cheerful mood now, then most likely you will not include something boring and dreary, to which you usually feel sad. 🙂
It is quite possible that these are songs of category 1.1, on which your memories are still superimposed.

"For condition". I think playlists for running, workouts, meditation and the like are just that. For example, I love listening to deep trance because it puts me in a certain state. Yes, I have a couple of basic compositions, but in general +- I can like everything there. And this does not mean at all that I am really a fan of this track and it turns me on. It just suits my state of mind.

"Interest singl". This is when I hear a new track and find it cute. It's not love at first note, but at the same time, this track somehow resonates with me. In such cases, I would like to somehow mark, so that later I can listen, in a different setting, in a different mood, and already there to give an assessment. Perhaps at that moment I will understand that he is weak, and I will mark him with a dislike so that I will never listen to him again. And perhaps, on the contrary, I will raise his "rating".

"Neutral". As the name suggests, these are tracks that make me neither warm nor cold. It's really "background music". This includes folk art such as Indian songs, various flutes/pipes, children's songs, and the like.

"Bad" - tracks that cause negative feelings in me.
If you go deeper, then this category can also be decomposed into subcategories.

"Unloved". I would put here the songs that I can listen to with some effort.

"Disgust". This is a situation from the category when a person cannot stand a whole genre. For example, when a person is a fan of classical music, and they turn on furious hardcore. If you look at my example, then, since I listen to music, and not text, then rap, with its recitatives, is rather boring for me and I don’t listen to it.

In this regard, the question is - what philosophy does Spotify adhere to? Because the functionality that they saw depends on it. And here I have a lot of discontent, because I lack the functions I need. Perhaps due to the fact that they make functionality for their own vision, which I just don’t know about.

If anyone knows where it can be found, please direct me.
