#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check July's review for more music.

In this issue, the theme is nostalgia. From nonreciprocating love, a unforgettable night out, lost friendships, or long distance relationships, indulge yourself, and give them a listen, with a word from the artists themselves.
🎧

Rebecca Helen – Lost In Your Love

You bring me to my knees

my baby

your kiss is sticky sweet

Your lips are cherry

blossoms baby

it's a tempting treat

Your eyes are miles of ocean baby
Your skin is silky soft
Your fingers know just how to touch me
It's like we’re making art

We take off in Cape Town, South Africa, for an Indie Dance track that fantasizes about that ideal person you'd like to be with, but you already know it's not going to happen:

"The song is about a time when I had a crush on someone and was too afraid to share how I felt. I did, but he was in love with someone else. However I still wrote the song to be a happy uplifting song. Riding the roller coaster of love and the euphoric feeling I had when he was around."

spotify:track:2YrZiHF1rkIeZk4TiKkCR3:small

The Sunday Shamans – As the Sun Comes Up

As the sun comes up

wake upon the day
separate yourself

I can see through you

the tenants of my mind

lost on what to do
lose yourself

we don't know what is true

From London, England, we enter the world of Psychedelia for a track about beginning the day having the feeling that you've fallen for someone, where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred:

"The track was inspired by a morning after going out, waking up with the sunrise, having the buzz still from last night and the connection you feel when falling in love."

spotify:track:0maPumwFe0AEcim1CxPUOA:small

Mi Primer Año Sabático – Escucha Bro

Solíamos
Fumar hasta morir
Solíamos
No parar de subir

Y se terminó
Aquella inocencia
Ya se terminó
Como esta canción...

We fly now to Santa Fe, Argentina for a groovy Ska track about growing apart from cherished ones, and longing for those moments you spent with them years ago:

"The song came after a period of listening to The Clash and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. It’s dedicated to our friends—those who were part of our first bands, who shared endless afternoons skating with us—who, over time and because of work or life circumstances, ended up becoming police officers. There’s a sense of affection and melancholy in it. We’re not judging them; it’s more about processing the distance that’s grown between us and the people we used to be together."

spotify:track:7urvRoVz3SYI4v5jCrFoUh:small

Giselle Parker – Fine

It started with a ripple, followed by a splash
The quiet intermission ended with a crash
Am I losing my head or just losing some salt?
I get to choose- so it’s never your fault

I used to want you closer, now I’m running scared
Don’t know if you’re listening, don’t know if I care
I hide out in the garden of my intrusive thoughts
But I’ve been caught

We now go to Edmonton, Alberta, CA for a Folk Pop song that wonders if life these days are a consequence or some exalted test, with the hope that, in the end, it’ll be just fine:

"I wrote Fine during one of the hardest years of my life. I was wrestling with the existence/nature of God, struggling to see the point of it all, and wondering why so many hard things were happening all at once.

I found it therapeutic to lay all the frustration on the table at that time in my life and be honest about where I was at. It’s still one of my favourite songs to sing. Definitely one of my most raw tracks, I think."

spotify:track:1KOFRKi7NvxOXxoff7on8w:small

The Open Flames – The Right Pill

Yeah, you can walk upon the moon

if you take the right pill,

but pretty soon, man, you will know

what is pain and how much

you can swallow.

But when you finally get up there,

and walk upon the lightest air,

you may finally know what it's like to be alone

with nothing to hold you down.

We finish by going back to London, for some poetic Pop Noir about the tough narrative of sacrificing it all to make it in the music business:

"The song is all about being a musician on the streets of Hollywood, thinking back to the girlfriend he left behind, and to the wisdom he sees on a bathroom stall when he's puking up pills.

so yeah, it's autobiographical 🙂"

spotify:track:2cUiaM3HtGowUOOz1wqnNs:small

Listen to them and much more on the complete Playlist

spotify:playlist:2IYRLjcwf2X9vC0QrI0b0P

See you next month!

I've discovered great songs through movies, and TV soundtracks, but usually it's mainstream stuff. Discovering up and coming artists, it's more of a word of mouth thing, and very rewarding when you see them succeed afterwards. 🙂

he nostalgia theme really ties everything together beautifully. Each track captures a different kind of longing — from Rebecca Helen’s dreamy unspoken love to Mi Primer Año Sabático’s bittersweet reflection on friendships fading with time, Giselle Parker’s Fine really hit me the hardest — that balance between faith, frustration, and hope feels so real. And The Right Pill by The Open Flames is such a haunting closer — poetic and raw. Thanks for sharing these gems and for keeping #MusicMonday fresh and meaningful every time. Already following the playlist! 🙌
