#MusicMonday is the hashtag I've been using for quite a while to share music recommendations from up-and-coming artists. Always fresh, and always different, trying to look for trends before they become one. You can check July's review for more music.

This issue's music tackles with life's everyday issues, like the monotony of routines, the loneliness of being sad, seizing your opportunities elsewhere, or just dreaming of doing something else. Give them a listen, with a word from the artists themselves. 🎧

BlueBerry – Maybach

Whiskey dans mon verre

Je le préfère sans glaçons

Du paradis a l'enfer

Comme une intime relation

Souvent solo

Peu d'sourrires sur les photos

Là j'suis sonné

Des cauchemars à chaque sommeil

Vise le sommet

Tous les jours j'me raisonne

Meme si on s'connecte

Ça fait pas d'toi mon collègue

We begin this edition, straight from Brooklyn, NY, with some French Rap about the transformation that happens when you decide to move far from home, but you never take your eyes from your objectives:

"I produce my own beats since always and usually start with producing a beat first without thinking of any theme, for this song I started with the 1st verse before I got into the hook.

The smooth jazzy melodies and percussive boom bap lo fi drums bringing this kind of luxury/old money vibe to it probably made a Maybach a good symbol for the success we are all trying to reach with a taste that is different from wanting a Ferrari or Lamborghini which doesn't align with what I like.

The song mostly is talking about my own journey in a way I hope can be relatable to others as I try to talk about life struggles in a universal way. Working hard, money issues, addictions, betrayal of love and friendship, keep going when you feel every odds are against you but also admitting your weakness and work around it to keep going forward and not forget our goal and embracing our ambitions which isn't an easy path for nobody.

For context, I was born and raised in Paris, and moved to New York when I was 23 by myself and didn't think I would stay here more than a year, but learned how to apply for working visa, went through all this new life step by step between credit record, applying for apartment etc etc, meeting people, creating a network that allows me to gather what I needed to eventually being able to work as an artist in the USA and as much as it took a lot of work, I feel grateful and blessed, humble and still want to move forward."

spotify:track:0I6HM3kDbFSTTH8GrKQU96:small

The Draize – Colour Me Blue

I'm a one track man
Stuck between minds
I go to work
And then I die
I walk alone
I sing along
On paper clouds
I linger on

Next stop, South London, England for a Janglegaze track offering several aural textures, signaling the sadness the color blue represents:

"At its core, the song is about surviving the repetition of ordinary life: work, routine, exhaustion and compromise. Early on in the writing process it sort of came across as an internal dialogue: think we were touching on stuff like self-comfort and self-disgust, drifting through “the machine” whilst searching for something to make it feel worthwhile - which I guess is the music.

It reflects inward sadness, while “It’s all for you” is a bitter joke you tell yourself to keep going. “Get that scumbag out my house” turns that frustration inward we think. Importantly, it’s real and based of some of our past and current member’s experiences during the pandemic and the following years afterwards."

spotify:track:5BJEeri00C6gL2FJSb3e9R:small

The Certs – LUNA

Finally the legacy
is all gone to waste
and never coming back

Let's travel south to Surrey, England for an Indie Rock track about moving on, never looking back, even if you have nowhere to go:

"The song is written by [band member] Carter. He went through a bit of a dark time and it’s about other people who also go through struggling periods in life. It’s called Luna, because when he was struggling to sleep the full moon would shine in his room and he felt it gave him a sense of calmness and clarity. He said it helped him climb out of the dark place his head was in.

The song is to sort of let other people know they are not alone when times are hard, or they too are in a dark place. There are many others in the same place."

spotify:track:5ANkA0AmRwPX4ZbebeMOvP:small

SUNHILL – Orbison

Fell into your mind again
Come on down
One at a time

Laymen ready to begin
Dig out a home
A nest of mine

We now fly to Gothenburg, Sweden for a Garage Rock track about the dream of liberty, where happiness is based of doing that thing you really want to do. Band member Oscar explains:

"The song was born from a pretty fragmented time in life. I was studying and trying to take it seriously, while we were writing an album where I felt like I couldn’t put in the time and energy I really wanted to. It was like standing between two identities without really being able to land in either of them.

I remember going home after the last day of my studies, and with a new sense of freedom I just wanted to write. The song came out almost immediately, and that feeling of relief shaped both the sound and the lyrics.

So the song is about craving comfort and relief after a period of stress and pressure in life. It is a total surrender to simplicity."

spotify:track:1C9XShYvQsjWGKySblo2Q7:small

M MIGRA – Ella me quiere a mí

Llegan con piso y apellido
Traen promesas de catálogo
Hablan limpio, miran fijo
Pero a ella no le compra eso

Ella mira y ya decidió
Sabe bien lo que le toca
Yo no tengo traje fino
Y aun así me abre la puerta

We end our trip in Madrid, Spain for an Afro Drill track about choosing character over security, when it comes to matters of the heart:

"Ella me quiere a mí comes straight from my life. I lived in NGO shelters more than once, undocumented, with no papers and no stability. And more than once, a girl who liked me got told by other people: “But he has nothing.” Meanwhile that same guy has papers, a job, a house — everything society says makes you worth choosing.

And she still chose me anyway.

That’s the whole song. It’s not really about romance — it’s about being reduced to your paperwork instead of who you are, and having someone see past that. I wrote it for anyone who’s been told they’re “not enough” because of a document, and still gets chosen for exactly who they are."

spotify:track:1e8KaTBQKEyaoIXkIWxhQJ:small

Listen to them and much more on the complete playlist

spotify:playlist:2IYRLjcwf2X9vC0QrI0b0P

See you next time!
