Cannot play albums without shuffle

Hi there. I want to play albums without shuffle. According to This community answer, and other threads, the solution is to go into "now playing" and click on the little shuffle indicator in the bottom right. However, this is not working. When I click "shuffle play", then go into "now playing, and deactivate shuffle, the current track still plays, and when I try to restart it reverts to shuffle. The only way to play in order seems to be clicking on the little menu and pressing "add to queue", which is annoying.

This is maddening. I'm on the verge of cancelling my premium subscription.

I've updated to the latest version of the spotify app and the behavior remains the same.

What am I missing? Any help is appreciated.
