iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 4 with Bluetooth, WIFI, Cellular connections

Im asking this question before I cancel and move to Apple Music.

im joining a gym and I want to play my Spotify playlists through my Apple Watch, if I’m understanding correctly I can’t listen to Spotify when my phone is not near as there is no cellular connection function or offline Music function and I will be way out of Bluetooth range as I will be putting my iPhone in a locker, but will Spotify work on my Apple Watch as it would if my phone is in my pocket if my Apple Watch and iPhone are connected to the same WIFI network? Even though my phone is not on my person or close?

Spotify now supports downloads on Apple Watch. This will be rolling out over the next several weeks.
