Are you sure the username is correct? Didn't you made any accidental mistypes?

You can also ask your friend for his Spotify URI, Spotify can open his profile via that URI.

Did you type in the search "spotify:user:USERNAME"? If he's your friend on facebook you can find him via the follow-tab on the left. If he's registrated with facebook and you aren't friends with him, he can look up his "real" username (not Name / Last Name) here which is a bunch of numbers that you have to insert in USERNAME.

Example:

spotify:user:catmeow1234567 or

spotify:user:1234567890
