Spotify offline mode

Hi I'm new to Spotify and don't have a subscription to it. I began listening in offline mode as I didn't want to use my data. However now I can't go into offline mode, and when I try to it gives me an error saying I have to use premium. So how does the free offline mode work? For just 1 month??

You only need to go online once in 30 days to maintain your offline music settings. What is the exact error message you see?

When I try and listen in offline it says upgrade to premium to listen offline
