Playlist order constantly re-sorts and jumps in “Add to playlist” menu (cross-platform)

I’m encountering a long-standing UI issue when adding songs to playlists that makes the feature very difficult to use, especially for users with many playlists and folders.

When I choose “Add to playlist”, the list of playlists in the picker (flyout on desktop, bottom sheet on mobile) re-sorts itself repeatedly while I scroll. Items jump positions, disappear, and reappear. Sometimes playlists that should be visible don’t appear at all until I scroll away and back again.

This makes it nearly impossible to reliably find and select the intended playlist.

Key symptoms:

Playlist order changes while scrolling
Playlists jump up/down rapidly
Scrolling to the bottom can cause the list to reflow and jump upward
Playlists sometimes don’t appear at all, then suddenly appear at the top
Happens consistently, not intermittently

Environment (all affected):

iOS (latest)
macOS desktop app
Windows desktop app
This suggests an account-level or shared UI logic issue, not a device or cache problem.

Reproduction steps:

Have a library with many playlists (especially inside folders)
Open any song
Choose Add to playlist
Scroll through the playlist list
Observe the list reordering itself while scrolling

This occurs even after reinstalling the app and logging out/in.

This issue has existed for years under various reports, but it remains unresolved. I’m adding a current repro across platforms in case this helps with prioritization.

MacOS: Spotify for macOS (Apple Silicon) 1.2.82.428.g0ac8be2b.

iOS: 9.1.16.1449

Windows: 1.2.81.264.gb4ad4efa.

Those may or may not be the current versions, respectively. However, I'll note this problem has persisted for months, presumably across many recent releases.

I see no easy way to attach a screen recording here, without a third party video hosting service. If you have a suggestion, please advise.

Thanks a lot for reaching out and for sharing all those details — we really appreciate the time you took.

From what you described and the recording, it looks like you have a very large Library, with lots of playlists inside folders and subfolders. When the Library gets that big, it can sometimes lead to loading or syncing issues while the app is trying to keep everything in sync across devices. It’s not ideal, but it can explain why this has been happening consistently over time and on different devices.

As a workaround, if it’s possible for you, trimming down some playlists or folders can help. Doing a clean reinstall from time to time can also be useful, just to make sure there’s no remaining or corrupted cache adding to the problem.

We’re always looking for ways to improve the experience, and your feedback is really valuable.

I have the exact same problem.

It appeared suddenly, and I now experience it also on my new phone, I guess I reached above a certain number of playlists. I only experience it on my two Samsung phones. S21 Ultra & S23 ultra, not in Windows. I have 35 playlists. No folders (I had no idea you could make folders)

I have no idea where to find the version number, the app just seems to say I am updated to the latest version 🙂

This bug is really annoying, I hope you can find a solution. Right now, When I click on "add to playlist" in the app, my most used playlist is first listed somewhere at the bottom. I have to scroll down almost to the bottom, then the list automatically reorders itself, and puts that playlist almost at the top, where it should have been from the beginning 🙂

PS: the playlits on the "add to playlist" list is shown in a different order different in phone and in computer.
PS2: You really should add a search function in a playlist. Some of mine ar large.

From what you described, the list reorders itself as you're scrolling to the bottom without any other input, is that correct? While this does happen on multiple devices, we suggest trying to perform a clean reinstall on both, as there could be some corrupted cache that's causing the order to be displayed incorrectly. This should help get things working again.

P.S. There is a search function in playlists. Just pull down when you're at the very top of a playlist and the search bar will appear. Find whatever you need within your lists and enjoy!
