Another account is already registered with this email address

So the email address listed under my account is very old and I no longer use it. I want to change the email to a newer address but it tells be I already have an account with this new address. I don't remember opening a second account but try and log in with the newer address anyway - however when I do so I am told Spotify has never had an account with this address?! How can I get round this problem?

It could be something to do with my account being linked to Facebook - I used to have the old address on the Facebook account also but have since taken it off.
