Can't login to Spotify from iPhone when off WiFi

Can't login to Spotify from iPhone when off WiFi

I have a Spotify Premium account and last August I bought a new iPhone 6s to replace my old iPhone 5s.  I noticed that I was still able to use Spotify on my phone while at the house and on WiFi, but when I would try to use Spotify in the car, Spotify would tell me I was offline.

I tried logging in via Facebook and Spotify would report it was unable to reach Facebook and I should check my network.  I tried logging in via username and password, and Spotify would tell me there are DNS issues and it couldn't complete the request.  Yet, still in the car, I was perfectly able to use Safari to search these very forums for answers to this issue.

I found a number of reports of this issue for other people who had just bought a new iPhone.  The answers were always the same.  Close the app, try again.  Delete the app and reinstall, try again.  None of it worked.  I assumed that there was some bug with how Spotify interacted with the iPhone 6s that, surely, Spotify would get around to fixing.

Six months later and still broken, I tried investigating the problem one more time looking for any new angle.  That's when I spotted it.  Spotify allows three registered devices, and mine were 1) home laptop 2) work laptop 3) old iPhone.  My new iPhone was a 4th device and Spotify was not allowing it to use my account.  I removed the old phone, added my new phone and everything worked fine.

For anyone else having this problem

* This article will show you how to manage your offline devices: https://support.spotify.com/us/learn-more/faq/#!/article/how-do-i-remove-my-offline-devices

For Spotify

* If I'm trying to use a device that is not registered to an account, the error should be "This device is not registered for offline use."  If I have no internet connection the error should be "You are not connected to the internet".  THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
