Confused about when I should sign up for Spotify Family Plan

Confused about when I should sign up for Spotify Family Plan

Hi all. I apologize in advance if this post is confusing. I'm thinking of signing up for a family plan with some friends, but I'm not sure about when would be the best time for us to sign up and who should be the admin user. Here are the people who want to join the plan:

Me - currently a free user

Friend 1 - recently canceled his premium plan so he's now a free user again

Friend 2 - premium user whose billing cycle just began a week ago

Friend 3 - premium user whose billing cycle just began a few days ago

The idea is that every month, all 4 of us would split the cost of the family plan equally by paying the admin user in cash, venmo, etc. To that end, should I, a free user, wait for a month to sign up for the family plan so that I don't have to split the $24.99 between me and the other free user (since the last two friends still have premium for about another 3 weeks or so)? Or would it be a better idea for a current premium user to sign up for the plan, in which case we can all just pay him individually once family plan payments kick in? I was under the impression that if you are a premium user and you sign up for the family plan BEFORE your premium plan ends for that month, you wouldn't have to pay the family price until after your premium plan ends. In the meantime, the subaccounts would all share in your remaining premium time, right?

Hey @naijakitsch,

To be added to a Family plan, a person must:

  • Reside at the same physical address as the administrator of the Family plan.
  • Be a Free user, or a Premium user who purchased their Premium directly from Spotify (and not, for example, via iTunes or a mobile operator).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that information. I didn't know that. Two of the friends actually live with me while the other one doesn't, so I guess the plan would only include 3 of us.

My original question still stands though. Not sure if it's better for a free user or a premium user to be the admin if everyone has different billing cycles.

@naijakitsch

I personally would suggest that the Free user upgrades to the Family plan and then add the subaccounts. But it really just depends on who wants to pay for it.

Let's say the premium user's next billing date is, I dunno, May 10th. If he became the admin user, what would happen to his premium account time between now and May 10th? Like would all 3 of us get premium until May 10th? Or would each of us get premium for that amount of time divided by 3? Hope my question makes sense.

@naijakitsch

Their/your remaining premium time will be shared eaqually between subaccounts. For more info, check out this FAQ: https://support.spotify.com/learn-more/guides/#!/article/spotify-family
