Ecard purchased in UK - can't use in States?

I wanted to make absolutely sure before I drop a lot of money on a gift for someone - if I were to have a friend in the UK purchase a Premium Ecard for me (I'm in the United States) so that I could gift it to someone else (also in the United States), that person would not even be able to redeem it?

I'm well aware it would be a lot cheaper just to straight up tell them I'm giving them a Premium membership and then pay for it through their own account using my money, but that's just not very... gifty?
