Family plan and existing premium membership

Solved!

Family plan and existing premium membership

I want to sign up for the family plan discount. My daughter currently has a premium plan. Can I turn her premium plan into a family plan and we join her plan or do I need to start a family plan and have her join my plan?  If that is the case can she transfer over to the family plan all of her information and playlists.

Thanks

Tom Jensen

Hi @Patience

Yes, you'll have to wait for your subscription to drop to the free plan.

Once it's on the free plan, you should be able to upgrade to the family plan.

Please let me know if it doesn't work for you after dropping to free.

Thank you!

Hi there,
Welcome at the Spotify Community!

It's about what you'd prefer. Do you want to pay to bills, or you'd like your daughter to pay?

The one with the main family account needs to pay the bills.

It doesn't make sense, your daughter can use her own account with existing playlists as premium or as family account owner, she doesn't need to make an new account.

Just to clarify what Michael said, all of your playlists are stored at the servers of Spotify and aren't bound to a subscription. Which means you can upgrade/downgrade without loading your playlists.

It might also be possible that your daughter needs to downgrade to a free plan first before it can be upgraded to a Family plan. In case you want to add more family members later, you will need to drop the Family plan and re-invite all of the members again, including the new ones.

It is probably easier to convert her Premium to the admin account then invite the others.

If you opt for option two and create a new account to be the admin, she then needs to cancel her subscription anyways and wait for her account to drop to Spotify Free before she can accept the invite to your family plan.

But will she lose everything she has set up already?  ie all her facebook connections, playlists etc?  I am assuming not, and this is probably what I want to do as well.  The issue is that she signed up with facebook and obviously does not want to give me her facebook credentials so I can pay for the account.  My credit card number seems to change about once a year and I need to be able to update it.

I have a similar problem, I hope someone can help me: I have two family members who are on existing Premium accounts. I thought that it's possible to invite them to the Family discount right now and so I created a Family Premium account for 20€ for myself (hadn't premium before that for a while).

Now it seems that they can't join because they are already on the Premium level. What can I do now? Have I just paid 20 bucks for only one account now?! Or is there a way for the other family members to directly jump to Free so that they can accept the Family invite?

@tpbever - That is an issue, but which account you upgrade as the admin is up to you. As long as you are using an existing account, all content will be preserved no matter what plan you are on so no need to worry there.

@der_dude - Those accounts do need to be on Spotify Free to accept the invite (which is mentioned on the family plan set up page). Spotify support will be able to downgrade them immediately for you (with the loss of the remaining premium time - that won't be refunded normally). If that is something you want, you will need to get in touch with the customer services team directly using the online contact form and they will be able to do that for you.

If you get an automated email reply back directing you to the community or help pages, you need to reply directly to that email (even if its from no-reply) and one of the customer services agents will get back to you as soon as possible.

I just changed my account from personal premium to family plan.  I invited by two kids, one who already had a free account and another who did not.  They both got their codes and signed up, and they both show up in my subscription info on the site.

However, both still apparently have non-premium access; they cannot choose songs, only shuffle.

Anyone else seen this?  Anyone from Spotify support on here>?

Thanks

@kartmel

There is currently a problem that is causing premium to not activate.

This should be fixed soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

If you still have trouble later today,

I suggest you contact support so they can help you

If you get an automated reply email telling you to check the help section or the community, you need to reply back to it.

I just tried to change my premium account to a family plan, I am the only one in our family with a premium subsciption and the others have been nagging me - but found that I couldn't upgrade (it won't go past the payment page), so I cancelled my subscription and tried again, still no.

Will I have to wait for my subsciption to drop back to free before I can upgrade?

I'm on my daughter's family plan. I have spotify on my phone and tablet, i had iot on my laptop but i was having problems wit it so i reset it and now when i try to sign in to spotify on my laptop it won't let me sign in. how do i fix this to get back on my daughter's family plan?

I signed up for the family premium plan not realising my daughter already had her own premium plan.  I invited her to join but it won't let her because she already has it.  Can she cancel hers and join the family plan without losing all her playlists etc?

How can I unsuscribe from my personal membership as I have suscribed to a family plan? I do not want to pay for 2 memberships!
