Give spotify premium users the option to change country when not at home

Give spotify premium users the option to change country when not at home

Give spotify premium users this option: I like an album that is not available in my home country. When I'm on vacation, the country I go to does have access to this album. To listen it with my premium account, I first need to cancel my subscription to free so I can change the country. Give premium users, because they already pay, the opportunity to change their country when they are in another country. So they can listen to these albums so that their algorithm picks it up for their music taste. Now this album will not be a part of my spotify wrapped and I think that is pretty unfair. We already pay, WHY can I only change the country with Spotify Free?! It doesn't make any sense and ruines my music experience when I'm on holiday.

Hi there @21edfiiwp4sgpltuf3tw,

Thanks for reaching out. We've moved your post to Help where it better fits.

There are several reasons why the option you described isn't possible. Firstly, availability can vary over time and between countries, depending on the permissions from rights holders and on local regulations. This is outside of Spotify's direct influence, thus availability will always dependent on the country of the account.

Free users can only use Spotify abroad for a limited time before needing to switch the country. This can be done from the account page and you need to actually be in a specific country to have the option to switch your account to it.

For Premium users, the country is defined by the payment method used and you can use Spotify abroad for as long as you like. Available content will however be defined by the country on the account. So if you need to change the country, you can either cancel the plan, wait for the account to revert to free and then change it manually, as you said yourself, or you can update the payment method to one issued in the new country. The setting will change on the next billing date.

The full details about the process of changing the country can be found here.

Hope this clears things up.

Hey @21edfiiwp4sgpltuf3tw,

Thanks for reaching out.

Spotify wants all the world’s music on Spotify, but some artists and tracks are currently not available (or are available in one country and not in another).

Reasons for this vary: Agreements with artists or labels may be ongoing or can’t be reached, or ownership of rights can change hands.

Those licensing agreements also play a role when it comes to changing the account's country setting (besides other reasons such as preventing abuse and the possible price difference between markets).

That's why you also need a payment method that's been issued in the same country and you also need to wait until the next biling date for the changes to take effect.

Have a great day! 🙂
