I was charged when I deactivated my subscription before trial was up

I'm being charged $19.99 when I canceled before the free trial is up. This could be because I was not able to successfully deactivate it for a while. It kept getting an error. I did not intend to keep my subscription and do not want to be charged for something I'm not using. If someone could please help me resolve this.
