Incorrect Subscription

I tried to use a gift card to create a student premium account, but the system automatically signed me up for the $9.99 per month choice. I was attempting to use the card for the student option, so how can I change it from the $9.99 a month to $4.99? I had an account created, but wanted to upgrade to premium student.

Hello and welcome to the Spotify Community!

As you can't use gift cards in order to subscribe to the Student fare, you subscribed to normal Premium, you'll need to unsubscribe and subscribe again with the Student Discount.

So does that mean I cannot use my gift card to pay for the student discount?

Nope, if you check the US Student Discount FAQ's you can check: 

Can I apply other promotions or pay for the Student Discount with a Spotify Gift Card? 

You can’t apply a Spotify gift card when signing up for a student discount account. You can apply a gift card for an existing student discount account. However, it will be applied as if your account is full price.
