Increased ads after cancelling sub?

I tried the "3 months for $.99" over the summer and then cancelled my subscription. Before I tried it I had an ad every 7-8 songs, now it's every 4-5 songs. Did this happen to anyone else? Why exactly is Spotify punishing me for deciding to not purchase their overpriced sub which offers no discounts for paying for a year up front?
