My Question or Issue:

I have a household with multiple members, each with their own spotify account within a family plan. Everybody is also a member of the Google Home family, and I've a bunch of Google Speakers spread throughout the house. According to both Spotify and Google, we should be able to listen to our own music simultaneously.

However, this is not the case. If I'm playing music in the kitchen, and my kid tells Google to start playing music in the living room, then the music in the kitchen stops. If she asks for her songs, it plays mine. If I'm at work, 50km away, listening to Joe Bonamassa on my phone (bluetooth earbuds), and someone at home asks Google to play to Ed Shearan, then my music stops and my Spotify app says it is now streaming to the speaker at home. And I'll have Ed Shearan in my list.

Is there a trick in setting this up properly?

Hey @caspervanheck, thanks for reaching out to the Community!

This is expected because all of those devices are being played on one Spotify account. Keep in mind that Spotify is meant for personal, non-commercial use as explained here, meaning that it’s not possible to listen on more than one device on the same Spotify account at the same time. That’s why the music switches to another device when it’s activated. The only workaround to this would be to get a shared plan - however each device 'member' would have a separate Spotify account but would be a bit similar to playing on multiple devices at the same time.

I hope this clears things up!

If you read the first sentence in my issue, then you'll see that every househould member has their own Spotify account, they're just in the same family plan. I understand the limitations imposed in a Spotify account, and even agree with them. My issue is in configuring Spotify to honour users' accounts properly, instead of directing every command to my account.

Hey @caspervanheck,

Sorry for the misread there. I took a closer look and you will need to set up Google Voice Match as described here so the smart speaker recognizes each member of the Google household and plays music from the respective Spotify account.

If you’ve already done this and it still doesn’t work even if Google recognizing that the commands are from different household members, let me know and I will take a closer look into this.

Keep me posted!

After setting up voice match on everyone's devices, several things happen:

  1. If we ask it if it knows who we am, it replies correctly for all of us. Which is cute, but also shows it understands who is talking, which is kinda cool.
  2. If I ask it for my reminders, it gives me mine, if someone else does, it gives theirs. Which shows this has been implemented.
  3. If I ask it to play my music, it plays my music.
  4. If my daughter asks it to play her music, it:
    1. Hijacks my Spotify irrespective of where I am (car, home, doesn't matter)
    2. Plays her music
    3. Adds her music to my played songs, which means my playlists keep being populated with Ed Sheeran (who I consider good, but still).

Is there a way to check why Google insists on using my account?

Hey @caspervanheck

Thanks for the info and for your patience while I look into this. Let’s try a few more steps. Can you try checking the default music account per speaker from the Google Home app? To do this, please go to each speaker and navigate to Settings > Music > Spotify > and make sure it's not explicitly set to your account. If it is, Google will always default to your account.

Also, please make sure that every individual connected link Spotify from their own Google account. For example, your daughter has to open Google Home while logged into her Google account > go to Assistant settings > Music > link her Spotify account herself.

Let me know how this goes.
