Part of a family, will travel overseas soon, can I play Spotify?

Solved!

Part of a family, will travel overseas soon, can I play Spotify?

Hello. I am part of a Family and I will be traveling overseas soon. Will I be able to play my Spotify when I am in another country and will the rest of the Family still be able to play their Spotify? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hi there,

If you're a member of a Premium for Family, then you should be able to enjoy your Premium features anywhere in the world for as long as you like, that means, you can still enjoy ad-free music even if you're in another country.

Don't worry, as you and your family members have separate accounts, their accounts won't be affected, and they'll still be able to play their favorite tunes without problems.

Hope it helps. Have a lovely day 🙂

Hi there,

Since you and your son is already on a Premium for Family subscription, then both of you should be able to enjoy Premium features anywhere in the world as long as you like. (even if he's in London).

However, since you mention that your son is having issues logging into his account, then first I'd suggest you to ask him to follow one of these steps:

  • If he created his account through Facebook, click LOG IN WITH FACEBOOK
  • If he created his account through Spotify, enter his username (not his email address) and password

If it still didn't work, then I'd suggest you to contact Spotify directly through their Contact form, so they can check your son's account from their end, and to better explain what happened.

You may also want to reach them through their twitter account @SpotifyCares.

I'm sure they'll be happy to assist you there 🙂

Hope it helps. Have an awesome day!

When you said you can't listen to any Spotify accounts after 14 days, I think it's a bit confusing, because as stated in their support site these are the features of a regular Premium:

Premium

and the Premium for Family features:

Premium for Family

  • Get six separate Premium accounts (you plus up to 5 family members) with one discounted monthly subscription.
  • Includes all the benefits of Premium.

The travel abroad part there should work even without changing the country settings on both subscription types. (because that is what has been promised for Premium feature).

And having a Premium for Family is equivalent to having a regular Premium.

What if you are overseas and don't have premium?? I have the free one and got a message just now saying you can only use Spotify aboard for 14 days???

Yes, you're correct, if you're on Free, then you can only use Spotify for 14 days abroad. So if you're planning to travel overseas, make sure to grab Premium before you leave.

Hope it helps. Have a lovely day 🙂

Hey @kburto23, Welcome to the Community!

It is possible use Spotify abroad for more than 14 days with a Free account.

After 14 days, you only need to change your country on your Account Page.

Don't forget to change it back to your own country when you are home 😉

Cheers,

Vincent

Edit: moved some replies to its own topic and back to this topic.

How so? My son is on a school trip to London now, he cannot log into spotify. Is it a known defect or how can we solve this problem?

edit: we have spotify family premium account, our accounts are linked.

Hello @witchcat9 and @5271337, Welcome to the Community!

I don't have any experience with this, but so far I know it's not possible to listen abroad for more than 14 days with a Family account.

With a  'normal' Premium account you can only listen abroad for more than 14 days after changing the billing country. That is not possible with Spotify Family, because it has one 'shared' billing coutry.

A temporary solution is to make a temporary Free account and use that until the you (or your son) is in the home country again.

Cheers,

Vincent

I appreciate your advice, but from consumer's point of view this has no value to me. Using a free account during the trip is an option, but given that I paid for the service it is very bad customer experience.

Obviously there's a great risk of exploiting where one registers at a country with cheaper subscription fee and shares with people from other countries. However, I believe that a regular user must not suffer due to fraudsters.

Spotify in general is quite neat, I like it. Sure they will find a solution to this. As a gesture of a goodwill it would be very nice to receive something in return.

Thanks Vincent.

Hello everyone!

I was totally wrong. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I just remembered that it's also possible to remove family members from the Family Plan. The removed account will become a free account and can be added back to the plan if the account holder is back in the home country.

As @sakura08 suggested, you can upgrade that removed account to Premium and change the billing country after the 14 day as I mentioned earlier. After the trip you can add the account back too the family, but make sure you change the billing country.

If you add an account to the Family Plan that is already Premium, the Premium Subscription stops automatically after the last paid month.

Hi @

I think if the purpose of leavingthe country is only for vacation or temporary, being a member of a Premium for Family subscription shouldn't be an issue (Given that the subscription won't be interrupted). In case your the son is having issues logging in, just follow the suggested steps on the thread and contact support if the problem persist.

@sakura08, only in the first 14 days. As I mentioned earlier, you can't justen with any kind of Spotify account after the 14 days if you don't change your country.
With Spotify Premium (for Family), you can go offline for 30 days, but you have to do this before the end of that 14 days.

@witchcat9 @sakura08 @5271337 @Algee,

I was totally wrong about listening abroad with Premium (for Family). It was a big mistake to interfere with something I don't have the full knowledge about. My honest apologies for the inconvenience. @sakura08 was right the whole time.

Hi ya!

I have Spotify premium and pay my monthly subscription. I'm going overseas for a month at the end of this year. I'm concerned that my Spotify will stop working after the 14 days. Can you please confirm for me that I don't have to have Premium Family, and it will work for the entirety of my trip?

Thanks,

Meg

Hi @meggosnell

Don't worry, since you're already a Premium subscriber, then you have all the power to use your Spotify anytime and anywhere (even abroad). So Spotify should be working for your entire trip 🙂

You don't need to upgrade to Premium for Family anymore as the feature to travel abroad is already available in your current subscription.

Hope you have a safe trip, and enjoy your music 🙂

Hope it helps.
